View Full Version : * * Dialogies Virtual Image * *

I'm sure we're all aware of the difficulties of installing dialogies so today i've created a solution to these woes - this basically involved installing it on a Windows XP "virtual image".

I'm currently putting the finsihing touches to the installation but once this is done i'd be willing to transfer the files to someone for hosting or, alternatively, would be willing to send copies out on a dvd for a nominal paypal fee to cover media/time.

FAQ below to see how this will benefit you;

Q. Whats the score with the virtual machine stuff?
A. A virtual machine allows you to run one operating system within another...any applications installed on the image are contained within one file meaning they can be shared without requiring reinstallation.

Q. What will i need to do to run Dialogies with this?
A. Install Microsoft Virtual PC (free) and then double-click the image file.

Q. Hang on...you're giving away an image based on Windows XP? What about legalities?
A. Although the image is fully functional, you should have a proper licence to run XP therefore i will install the Windows Genuine Advantage component tol constantly remind you to buy and install a licence. Until this is done the image should be considered for evaluation only.

Q. How big is all this and will it need a good machine?
A. I'm zipping it now but the uncompressed image is about 6 Gigabytes...you'll need that amount of space free plus a reasonable spec to run (256Mb with Pentium 3 or greater).

Any interest parties please post below

Can you explain this in layman's terms?

drsmith1979

think its just like having it as a read only file or like a pdf version so you can view everything but it doesnt have all the functional problems of being an actual running program. but thats just a stab in the dark lol

Sure,

you'll get a file that you'll double click on and you'll see a "mini" version of windows XP load that has dialogies already installed.

No more troublesome installations...just copy to future machines and run like any other file.

Kinda.

See my last post...it runs a copy of XP inside your current opereating system. None of you're machines actual settings are changed...its all internal to the image.

Nope, none.

Its just like a emulator (word i was looking for above)...this link probably explains things a bit better > http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_PC

Dude I had this idea too!

Think I mentioned it on here once or twice...

I was all ready to announce it but I forgot to block the virtual network card - quicktime then updated itself and rendered it useless as dialogys has to have the exact files given on the disc - I was most annoyed :lol:

So yeh I'd be interested purely to stop me having to reinstall the entire thing again :D

Right i've got the DVD image finalised so if anyone wants a copy i can now start sending it out.

Payment wise i'm going to set it at only £2.50 via paypal which i think is pretty reasonable;

- 1st class stamp is 34p
- Envelope is about 5p
- DVD is about 25p

This means once paypal fees and materials come off i'll only get £1.50 per sale to cover my time.

Remember this means no more p1ssing about with the crappy dialogies installers!

PM me if anyone interested.

Note, you must have any of these for it to run;

- Windows XP Professional,
- Windows Server 2003,
- Windows Vista Business,
- Windows Vista Enterprise,
- Windows Vista Ultimate

Please check beforehand!

6gb? :o

I'm tempted to screenshot every page and build them into a website that runs as dialogys does...

but I can see Reno not being happy :p (login only?)

Yep 6gb...but remember that windows too as well as dialogies.

Your right though...screenshot every page would be the thing to do but it'd take ages. I started doing that over on f7power but it was getting the part numbers listed too that was taking serious time so never completed it. :(

No, i've RAR'd the virtual image file into a multipart archive so it goes down to 2.9Gb on disc.

Took 1.5 hours to build the archive!

still, windows shouldnt be that big!

u33db

still, windows shouldnt be that big!

It isn't really.

The virtual hard drive is only reading about 4.8gbs used (inc dialogies install and pagefile) so i think the image file is retaining some free space for expansion.

TBH i got to the stage where a gig or so wasn't worth worrying about...space is cheap and nearly everyone has plenty lol
