View Full Version : Gear slipping in 5th

The gearbox is generally fine but when in 5th if you go above say 70, the gearstick slips out of gear. You can hold it there but you feel a force pushing it out. It doesn't happen in any other gears. And the engine mounts have just been replaced. Any ideas?

Get some oil in there ASAP!!!!!!
Most likely wear due to lack of oil.

Flush the old oil first and have a look at the oil that comes out (also how much). Will most probably have a metallic tinge to it.

Metallic tinge = fragments of the wear from gears.

If it's the JC5 box throwing 5th this is pretty common irregardless of mileage and the box is NOT shafted so fear not as it's an easy fix! I can even give you pics of the parts if you need them as i've done a few rebuilds on them ;)

Drain the box of its oil and then remove the 5th/reverse gear end cap. You will see a big 21mm nut on the 5th gear and this will be finger tight which is allowing the shaft to move under load. Tighten this up as best you can (Note the box will try to spin so if you have access to an air rachet use it as it'll make the job easier). Whenrefitting the cover be carefull to ensure the rubber seal is seated correctly and not pinched. Also be carefull not to over tighten the bolts as you can easily strip the thread in the ally casing!

It's all covered in a Renault tech note so get yourself outside as it'll take no more than 35mins to sort.

The same thing happened to us on the way back from Dave Walkers place and I thought the box was buggered to till I consulted the manual and I found the tech note... sure enough it was right and the box is still going strong today.

Popping from 2nd also! Check the condition of the rear engine mount and then check linkage adjuster as already suggested. I'm not too sure on the Clio Williams linkage but if its anything like the Phase 2 19 there won't be any adjustment in it as it'll be a solid bar.

Yeah it pops out of 2nd every once in a while, its not major at all only does it once in a day of driving? usually at low speed going round rouadnabout.

Its annoying, but i think its ****ed syncro.

thanks for all the replies. Gonna check the end nut and see if that fixes it.
