For 1995 rules for "F2" (2 litre atmospheric, 2 wheel drive) rally cars were changed to allow much wilder machines using special parts that also had to be sold as a kit to customers. At last we got some interesting creations after all the boring years since Gr.B was cancelled! Renault took their Clio Williams Gr.A and created the Maxi Clio. It was used as the works car only in 1995.

hi mate....

the maxi was the next stage up from the group A car with a wider kit and bigger rims. they ran between 270/280bhp at 8400 revs. thay ran a six speed box either a hewland or sadev gearbox with a sequential shifter. 17/18 inch rims 300/330 mm brakes. lots of other stuff too.
they ran different specs depending on gravel or tarmac usage.

It was a kit-car (the first rallye kit-car on the World!). You were able to buy the whole vehicle in parts (as Clio R3 nowadays) from Renault Sport and you had to assemble the Maxi in your workshop. Naturally these parts were very expensive.

(Mr. Janzer - a Hungarian rallye driver - got his R3 at Renault Sport)

I see now, it's a kit that one assembles by himself right? and the engine too? or the engine is tuned like any other car, not a special kit for it..? I'm a little confused :)

Hi Yamaha,
The Renault "Works" cars were assembled in the Renaultsport Competition department in Dieppe. The engines were assembled/tuned by SODERMO,the gearboxes were SADEV sequential,Suspension on the cars doing the British Rally championship plus the RAC as it was then, was by PROFLEX, supplied by there main agent in the UK ~~ Gordon Birtwhistle, who lives about 20miles from me   and can still supply these remote cannister systems, about £450 EACH   for the rears.
I am not 100%.but I think the BRC cars used to come to a main Agents in Rochdale (whose name I forget). These were then "shaken down ~~ spanner checked and sent on the events.I have stated in earlier post, that on the Circuit of Ireland and Ulster Rallies, the cars went to HURSTS of Belfast ~~ I have documentation from Tim Jackson (Renaultsport UK) with the various itenary for these events ~~ this plus other paperwork,I got when I bought the Irish car ~~ which actually became the 3rd points scoring Renault in the Championship ~~ It finished 30th in Ireland   .Drivers at that time Alain Oreille and Robbie Head,in the BRC,whilst in Europe was a very quick driver, Phillippe Bulgaski, but unfortunately had a very bad accident,in which his co~driver was killed, after that I do not remember him doing any more events.
It was great to see them refueling the cars, the mechanics had the aluminised "space suits" and breathing apparatus  8) ~~ that fuel would send you silly just sniffing the exhaust fumes
