Guys im off to the Pod this sunday, and my mate and I have been chastising each other who is going to win down the QTR mile. I am planning on taking out the spare wheel, rear seats, all mats, rear boot carpet, parcel shelf with suit holder and running it on about a qtr of a tank of fuel. :D

Will this be enough to beat a standard 172 cup? Please say yes!! I have run a 15.8 with soo much stuff in the boot and a tankfull of gas before so im hoping for some serious gains down the next run i do.

Craig

hmmm cups have been known to run low 15's high 14's or even low 14's depending on state of tune!

get the bugger stripped out, and you should give him a run for his money!!

mine ran 14.3 with just exhaust and decat and stripped out!

I was dead even with my mates 172 cup off a roundabout upto about 80 or 90. A few blasts and it was pretty conclusive that he was no quicker. Thats a 20 k cup v a 140k Williams by the way. He was two up, but i weigh as much as two people anyway. So id say you will at least match him if your car is mechanically sound. If you have a fast one id say youll beat him. 0002 would have easily dispatched him, which on 18k would have been a more fair comparison. My Williams at the time also had no midrange torque due to a faulty exhaust.

Suffice to say my mate was a bit gutted.

Thats a pretty good time Craig. Mine will be standard apart from a Piper X induction kit, and stripped. I may be being optimistic, but im aiming for a low 15 i.e 15.3 or something. Do able?

FlamingMonkey
17-02-2005, 12:45
Yeah I reckon i15.3 is easy do able my times vary from 15.3ish to 14.9, I have a decat and exhaust

YYYYEEEEAAAAHHHH!!!!

Cant wait! Cheers fellas for the input! 8)

Run 35 psi in your tyres instead of 32 (if you are on 185 55 15's). I find this is an improvement in grip.

FlamingMonkey
17-02-2005, 13:08
I thought the less pressure you have in the tyres give you better grip due to there being more tyres to grab the road?

KingStromba
17-02-2005, 13:16
I personally think that putting more air in the tyre gives better grip. If you want more tyre on the road i would go for a wider tyre, but again put more pressure in it.

Lower tyre pressure in my experience give more torque steer (which you could argue means your getting better grip) but in reality means you are getting sore sideways movement, and therefore less forward momentum. Higher tyre pressures keep the sidewall firmer and allow the tyre to keep the car on a more forward tradectory. Everytime you correct torque steer you are loosing tenths.

Flame suit on

Craig
17-02-2005, 13:19
lower the pressure a bit in the fronts for grip off the line, but get the backs up to about 40psi! i knocked 0.1 off at pod this way

17-02-2005, 13:20
lol.....the trick is to get a happy medium between low enuff to get god gri off te start, but high enough to not affect stability

personally i dont bother much, have done once or twice with no real improvements, so run mainly at normal pressures

KingStromba
17-02-2005, 13:21
Its a well know fact F1 cars put MORE pressure in tyres on qualifying runs where grip is important, but tyre life isnt.

2 live
17-02-2005, 13:23
and its a well known fact that all pro drag racers drop the pressure in the tyres to as low as 10 psi in those hoooooj slicks to get grip off the line.the front ends usuaully in the air so steerin by throttle

KingStromba
17-02-2005, 13:33
LOL, depends on the rubber you are running too. I did put the caveat about 185 55 15 rubber. This rubber IMO needs higher pressure because they have taller sidewalls. Let the pressure drop and you get a 'spongy' sidewall.

Im running Uniroyals 195-50-15's all round with approx 30 psi. I have an electric air pump and digital reader so i can adjust the pressures when im there.

Air temps are raging from 2 -5 deg C on the sunday, which is quite chilly so i assume that the tyres will probably drop in temp a little anyway.

KingStromba
17-02-2005, 15:18
Let us know how pressures affected runs if you can tell

Martin
18-02-2005, 00:34
There is a lot of variety in the speed of 172 in general with some running as quick as 14.1 (chip/filter/zorst/stripped) to 14.6 (standard) to 15.4/5 (Shite!) lol Tbh I'd say a good cup will usually beat a good williams. Contraversial!
But if you get a good start you've always got a chance..oh and slip a de-cat on there if you have'nt already!
Oh and on the subject of tyre pressure I've tried normal and 20psi front/40 psi front, did'nt notice much difference..tbh

Craig
18-02-2005, 00:40
martin you get home ok then? didnt blow the car up filling her up with petrol??

Martin
18-02-2005, 00:46
Yeah, no problem mate, quick pit stop..sorted! This thing pulls like a train...big difference to my williams.

KingStromba
18-02-2005, 00:49
Youve bought his car?

Can i buy your wheels?

Craig
18-02-2005, 00:51
martin yeh its quite quick, will feel a bit quicker when you get that pipercross off it tho mate

really feels that much different to your williams then?

KingStromba
18-02-2005, 00:51
So whats going on them? Has Martin bought it?

Winston
18-02-2005, 00:54
Wanna race

Good lad martin!!!!!!!

Craig
18-02-2005, 00:56
yeh martin is the new owner of the banana beast!

im sure he'll be beating my 14.1's once that limiter is upped!!

KingStromba
18-02-2005, 00:59
Comparison Martin?

Martin
18-02-2005, 01:46
8) Make me an offer I can't refuse if you want me wheels Stromba!

As far as comparing my williams and the banana... Well for starters the higher torque in the banana is very noticeable it's got much better pull low to mid range. Can't get used to the 6.5k limiter though, especially with the 7k valver dials I've already headbutted the windscreen a couple of times! lol
Need to decide between chipwizard re-map and hillpower iincreased rev limiter to sort that.....As far as handling goes...at first I thought the valver felt less keyed in to the tarmac compared to the willy although this may just be the lower profile tyres and being unfamiliar with the car.All in all though I'm well pleased!

its an import classic scooby doo. he's only run it once at pod and managed a 13.3. i might take it to york, but knowning my luck id blow the clutch or something!

the clutch has 10months warranty left on it, and it says on teh receipt 12 months warranty unless burnt out hehe

KingStromba
18-02-2005, 20:08
Did it make you think 'shit this is fast'?

Martin
19-02-2005, 17:37
Er yes it did! :) The pull from low revs is pretty similar to a mates sierra cossie coming on boost! :o

KingStromba
19-02-2005, 17:39
Im liking the sound of that. So are you a happy monkey at last? :D

Martin
19-02-2005, 18:08
:D but I'll be happier when I've sorted this frickin' 6.5k rev limit out!

2 live
19-02-2005, 18:12
lol..im surprised craig never got that sorted out either tbh lol....think gdi were offering a free plug in to get the extra revs..not sure if u wanna use em or not tho mate lol

KingStromba
19-02-2005, 18:13
So next step GDi then?

Martin
19-02-2005, 21:32
LOL erm I think I'll steer clear of gdi, will give nick hill a ring and see how much he can do it for...hmm I think just over 7k would do nicely with these valver dials. :)

KingStromba
19-02-2005, 21:35
What about some nice yellow line on the rev limit for the banana?

KingStromba
19-02-2005, 21:54
Is this the yellow williams?

21-02-2005, 15:00
Well when i say beat him...it was only by 4 tenths!! LOL!! But winning's winning as ol Vin Diesel himself says!! The trouble was nobody was doing really good times apart from the heavily modified. CTR's were only doing 15.6's. The cold air was great but getting traction was very hard indeed due to the cold tack temp. I didnt manage to change tyre pressures either as i forget to bring my portable compressor. I was running approx 30 psi all round.

That 15.2 I ran was quicker than a lot of supposedly faster machinery, and at several £000 less made me feel quite happy! :D

sounds rapid m8, as the 182's that day were only apparently running 15.4's at best iirc

LMAo @ 15.4??? What the amazing beat everything 182???

What a load of marketing shite.

True that is a good time, especially on a slippy track. Beating your mate by 4 tenths is a fair bit on the 1/4 mile, I'd say 1 or 2 tenths would be a close race.

21-02-2005, 22:26
Martin, when are we going to see the Banana in action? What about some vids?
