mate of a mate has a restored mark 1... remember tho they have no mod cons at all! no power steering etc etc... friend at work has just bought a mark 2 GTI . i will one day own a mark 2 escort RS2000 again. so expensive tho (obviously it will already be restored)

Yes, cracking little black 1979 motor, obviously not in the williams class but handled well, was nippy, reliable & easy to maintain. Rust was a general problem, but especially the rear subframe & floor, get it as high on stands as you can & get right under there with a good light. They are 25-30 years old now so you need to be fussy.

own a mark one 16v motor for a while. handled well etc but did have coilovers polybushes etc. not a bad motor but rust bad along the rear sections were the rear beam bolts up.

not a quick or as good as driver as a willy though. maybe with a vag 20v lump though

I dont know why you say renaults rust? they arent that bad!! french cars are better than most other cars for rust id say! but like anything, some good some bad, my old escort turbo was rotten as hell, but the cabriolet i bought to swap all the running gear into didnt have a spot of rust or a plate of weld anywhere, completley mint!
Clios seem to rust less then 5's and 19's for some reason....
