Reno Recommend Tranself 75w 80 TRJ.

Most 75w90's are too thick and do not work well with JB/JC boxes.
Experienced this myself - wen my GB was cold would not down shift easily at all.

Another option is TransELF 75w80 TRX, which is what I ordered over the TRJ as it has a higher kinematic viscosity and flashpoint.

ELF Tranself TRX 75w80 is suggested to JC5 by Renault (but to tell the truth it's not very good in cold... the shifting is often "hard")

a local place gave me some castrol 75w 80 for mine not sure what specific type but it was fully synth and made the gear box very smooth even when cold.

I have just redone mine about a month ago (due to drive shaft failure)with Elf and its not as good tbh.

But i dont use the car much these days so not too worried

its the ELF TRJ thats recomended for JC/JB gearboxs

the ELF TRX is recomended for PK/PF gearboxs

I put some Tranself TRX 75w-80 in on my last box oil change, its good stuff, pricey though.

Check this: Tranself TRX 75w80 - product data sheet: http://www.lubadmin.com/upload/produit/FichePDF/lang_1/1076.pdf

Yup - I seen the data sheets on both.

TRJ is recommended for JB/JC Boxes.
TRX is compatible with JB/JC Boxes.

Allan - The last month or so have been a lot colder than previous months - could that be why the castrol felt smoother ?

I used millers trx 75/90 in the jc and have no problems, very smooth,

Where do you get the elf Tranself TRJ 75w-80 oil from, ive tried reno and they said they only get it in 20litre barrels for the workshop.

I need enough to do a gearbox oil change.

thanks

I had the same problem with the TRX. Ended up getting 20litres as me and my brother have a few GB gb changes to do.

Was available in 4 litre tubs at my renault dealer.

BRUN

if you take a container to Renault they may dispense some of the workshop TRJ into it for you and charge you accordingly, it depends how its all set up on the system to be honest

its 100% available in 5 litre containers as this is what i get from work, also 1 litre used to be available but we dont stock it personally, any parts department should be able to get it, its listed with all the other ELF engine/box oils

My bad yeah mine was 5L tubs not 4L, they also had the 1L top up bottles too.

Brun,

It is the original Williams 'Specific' Handbook that came with the Cars.
Will try and get a copy of the front page of the booklet and also the page in question.

Although, I am sure there are others with the same book who can confirm the above.

renault changed what they should use years later, as with alot of the stuff they change too(bloody renault!), there was alot of problems early on with poor gear changes which was due to incorrect fluid used, i dont have direct access to the data now but as brun can easy check renault recommend TRJ version in all JC5/JB boxs, this dont mean TRX or any other isnt compatable, just what they recommend.

for example they recommended ELF EXCELLIUM 5w40 (engine oil) for clio 182 etc but not recommend 5w40 EVOLUTION!

Only difference between the two fluids is:
TRX has a slightly higher kinematic viscosity and a higher Flash point.

Neither (IMO) will change the characteristics heavily enough to cause 'poor gear changes'.

Companies will recommend another item/product for many reasons not just due to their applicability.

Brun - If you could find out more about the change that would be good.

Data Sheet for TRX 75W80.

Notice the first page: ''to replace 80w Grade''

Are you sure the change was from TRX to TRJ? or from 80W to 75W80??

The change in a thinner oil (governed by SAE standards) will have more of an effect on making gear changes smoother.

I have used 80W in a JB3 Box and it was not nice to use at all, specially when cold. 75W80 works/worked a hell of a lot better.

wether he finds any documentation i dont know, alot of the stuff back then was all paper docs sent to each dealership, where as now its all done via renault.net, most dont have the paperwork or its usually pretty tatty if they do. i couldnt find the stuff at my dealership as with it being a fairly new site they lost alot or it was stolen when they moved sites.

for well over the last 5years and further back renault have recommended TRJ 75w80 in JC/JB gearboxs and TRX version in PK/PF(found in lagunas/vans etc usually) brun can easy confirm this as theres a full list for each vehicle/gearbox used by renault.

do you know the ins and the outs of the oil mate ?

because all the lads at work say TRX is shite, they hate putting it in anything

near enough the whole wall next to where im sat is wallpapered in part numbers and spec sheets etc lol

I dont claim to be an expert in oil's. I do know about viscosity and flash points.

Have used the oil in various cars - and they have been perfect.
All JC5 boxes.
