Hi,

Im trying to get some custom cages fabricated at prices competative to OMP for just the 1/2 cage like you chaps have.

Could i get some pic of them to help them price them up for me.

I will also be getting harness bars for them.

omp ones are only £300. full cage.

the full on 20 odd point 'custom cages' cage was only summat like £460 in CDS last time i looked too.

bit more for T45 like, but saving a fair chunk o weight may make it worthwhile.

Yeah... its just some people like me like the idea of not having the A piller renforcements etc so i want one a little cheaper than OMP or about the same, but lighter weight.

no offence.........but whats the point of protecting the bit ur not sat in???

It re enforces the roof directly above your head if you roll. so it does protect you, has door bars too. The car should servive a roll over from what i have seen anyway so this ensures your head doesnt get squished.

what are u going to fix the door bars to?

AndyFielder

run diagonals from the uprights to the floor... means you can still get in the bloody car!

hmm. may as well go whole hog tbh. and get removable door bars.

good luck with the project tho.

gotta agree with 2live.

although i do like the look of midges and coops cages, i cant really see why they didnt go the whole way and have a full cage. (i do really - they didnt put the cages in - previous owners did)

best to get the full thing imo, and just keep the door bars kinda low. it makes getting in easier. my door bars are really high up, but are better protection for side impact.

full cage helps stiffen the chassis a lot more than a 1/2 cage.

as above mine came like it, though it DOES have door bars, diaganol from half way up to a box section on the floor

if you get a proper cage that runs down the screen pillars behind the dash they are far less intrusive than the type that runs in front of the dash..

ai as stew says, i would of bought a full cage if i'd of chosen it, but as the car came with one am not in a rush to change it yet, list of to dos!

i would get your cage extended rather than replace it coops

Coops

can that be done easy enough yeah? just weld the extended arms onto the roll over section i have in place i guess?

northy

yes, clean the paint off and u can add asmuch as u want - weld and repaint.

Wouldn't be as strong. Full cages if I'm not mistaken run hoops front to back and effectively brace in between those hoops.

Just welding bars to run from teh rollover hoop and down the A-pillars won't be anywhere near as strong, with the weld being a likely weak point.

especially if u cant get to the top of the tube to weld it. would mean that the cage would only be welded at the joint where u can see, i.e not a full weld going all the way round the tubing. unless u cut a hole in the roof, fold it up, weld the cage, then weld down the roof.

and agreed with maxiboy. the cage should go down the screen pillars, reinforcing them all the way down, and run behind the dash. this does create a fair bit of extra room over the cheap uns that go in without mods to the dash.

depends how the cage is formed - from memory im not sure where the welds are up by the roof.

Might work out more expensive that a full new cage actually

You cant just weld new bars to the top of the cage with it in situ, lol, that is crazy idea. You going to cut ahole in the roof to get access?

2 lives is quite right.

northy

never said what bars i would keep and what bars are scrap :winkey:

2 live

no ones on about which bars would be kept, or scrapped. just that the idea wouldnt really work unless the cage was out the car or u were going to cut flaps in the roof to aid in access to weld.

would be cheaper and easier to get an fia approved one imo.

the welds should be at the hoop across the top of the windscreen, and again at the hoop behind the seats, with a tube running from one to the other across the top of the door..

would be out of the car to rework it Jon.

No worries - :P

if i was going to do it, the cage would be out the car as i want to paint the interior anyway. so what would be the best option, modify the current cage out of the car to include full cage specs, or sell up and buy the whole lot?

stew

id imagine that if properly welded would be as strong if not stronger.

things very rarely break at welds!

yeah you would obvisouly take the cage out to do the work.

as said above, a full cage has two hoop sections that are bolted/welded together, acting in compression rather than shear. Welding front hoops on would increase the chance of shear in an accident, but i dont know by how much etc.

nowt wrong with midges and coops cages - a good alternative for everyday use, and something is better than nothing, but imo if ur gonna do it should go the whole hog and do it right!

Ever seen a rolled clio guys??

The A pillar is the weakest part of the roof!!

ai but my head isnt there, my head is directly under the roll over bar in the roof
