Sounds like a blocked heater matrix to me.
Cheap part but booked as 8 hours labour.
Mat.
hard job then ? does that mean i need a new heater ?

No you need a new heater matrix, the bit the coolant flows through and warms up, circa £40-50 for the part but you have to take the dash out to fit it.
took me about 5 hours to do mine, hardest part it lifting teh ****ing dash back up and bolting it back on on your own....not hte lightest or easiest thing to manover around

^^^ I AGREE, fitting dash back is a nightmare, more than likely your heater matrix matey,

Part is about £30 from GSF but as Matt says a garage will charge you a right packet.
It's not difficult to do at all, just fiddly and time consuming. Dash doesn't need to come out, just forward enough to replace the matrix.
The Matrix..... lol Common problem it seems with clios, ive just done my second one, took about three hours, first time around it took 5 or so, got a third one on mothers clio to do before it gets too cold... its not a bad job, second time around i didnt even have to take the steering wheel off
Just fiddly and time consuming, id hate to think what a garage would charge...

so you have got to take all the top off the dash off, were is it placed ?
underneath the heater unit. where the pipes go through the bulkhead.
is tehre a way to simply flush the system?

If you can work out which way the water flows round the system (out the bottom of the header tank and in the top?) then you could try back-flushing it to dislodge some of the crap and hope it comes out when you then flush it the other way?
Mat flushed mine I think but it's getting blocked again :(
