... like it's running straight cut cogs, especially when you're on the overrun.

I'm concerned - I'm guessing it's starting to go?

Bloody thing... lol

Yup sounds like its going, mine lasted about a week after the whining started before it started popping out of gears then I started loosing them completely.

Cock

I'm guessing it's a new box or at least a box-off job... :(

FFS

I can't afford all this :(

Ebay is looking like £150-250 for an exchange job :?

i would say there cutting corners as the parts required are 200 quid from ebay so theres no labour in that...

Oh, nice.

Think I'll pass from them then! lol

Thanks for the tip :)

You can get cheaper 2nd hand boxes from ebay got mine for £70 and fitted it myself, obv its pot luck as it might fail in a month or last for years.

As mentioned above you could buy a second hand unit but its a bit pot luck, valver boxes should be even cheaper but really you'll want a Williams box unless its just a temp measure.

The full Renault repair kit including bearings, synchros, seals etc is a tad shy of £200+VAT from Renault, this is the best price you will get for the genuine article, and thats going through Mikey at Rentech in Portsmouth - 02392 66 58 48 http://www.ren-tech.co.uk/. Tell him Matt with the CUP racer passed you on. He can also get the boxed refurbed for you by a gearbox specialist he uses for around £175+VAT.

So that works out at £440, not including getting the box out of the car or anything like that. Oil would be another 30quid for the genuine stuff.

Soon racks up.

I posted all this up before in this thread: http://www.williamsclio.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=26361 It was only on the second page of mechnical  Also I think it's J_A_R_B's Williams at Mikeys right now getting the gearbox sorted. Tis def one of the cheaper options. Just depends if you want to go that route or not.

I personally wouldnt get too worried if you arent 100% sure it is the things you have mentioned ot until it goes!!

My 16v has genuinelly whined from day 1 from when i bought it 3 1/2 yrs ago.

Im pretty sure its the gearbox.

Its sounds awesome down high streets where the sound is packed in. Sound like its got straight cut cogs like you say! More prominent higher up the revs in 1st and 2nd gear, not flooring it but feathering the throttle and holding it!!

Most people tend to look round and to see what the noise is all about. It just whines away, kind of an electric sound, love it!!! :D

My Williams is exactly the same mate, it has whined since I bought the car 3 years ago, and with LSD it sounds like a bag of bolts too lol! Wouldn't worry too much unless it goes pop, you could try changing the oil to quieten things down too...

hmmmmmmmmmm

Now you two have said the above I'm not sure... LoL

I hadn't noticed it before this week and when I did it was as you say - pretty quiet and almost like an electrical whine.

I'll wait and see anyway - I worked out I'm only doing about 100 miles a week at the moment because I'm so skint and can't afford petrol :? :( so hopefully it'll last a bit even if it is on the way out! Box is pretty sloppy so I know it's getting old, just going to cross my fingers it doesn't die lol

summeh - cheers for posting 8)

You're right, it does add up! but I think I'd rather do it right than do it cheap and end up doing it twice. I know my luck... lol

On a side note - if it's out and being refurbished/rebuilt, and given that I won't be able to 2.0 it for quite a while, could I get a williams or diesel 5th gear swapped in? Would it give me what I want, namely the same acceleration through the gears but a more relaxed cruise?

Cheers all :)

LOL!!! you wa luck or i was unlucky, mine started whining on the morning and by the afternoon, it was poping out of gear :?

Got a illy gearbox now tho, :)

Speaking of the difference, i no the bearings and everything else on a illy are strong...

What about the ratio's valver to illy, it is just 5th gear...?

Sorry to hi-jack the thread

Mike @ Rentech is a great guy really goes out his way to help you out just had exchange unit put in. Needed more than just the repair kit and mike managed to source a box a little cheaper for me.
