Picked it up earlier today, and its an absolute flying machine. Seriously seriosuly quick, a lot faster then i would have hoped. So fast in fact, that i am now the gearbox's worst enemy. 100 miles in to the journey, and a few good blasts with my mate 290bhp TT and some random, but very quick RX7, the dif decided it had had enough and tried to jumpout of its housing, leaving me with a cracked box. Car is now at Yozza's awaiting a new box courtesy of J3NED. BIG BIG thanks to Yoz and Fred for helping me out, no doubt i'd still be stuck in Stoke otherwise.
Hopefully be sorted on Monday if i can talk Winston or 2Live into a day of labour for some cold hard cash, and it will be at York to make its first 13 second run

let us know your findings!, i am considering a similar setup to yours in the future but i am concerned with power limitations on the willy box and valver box.

let me know what you find out!

Team think have a newly built jc 5 up for grabs... just needs a slight crack in casing welding up

KingStromba
05-06-2005, 15:45
Team think, i wouldnt buy a horse of these cowboys

BenR

if he broke the diff housing on the way up, last thing he wants is to buy a box with a broken diff housing that needs welding! lol

VIPERONE
05-06-2005, 16:26
hey! i never said buy it.. i was just stating if it were me.. i'd be on the ohoneto quaiffe

BenR
05-06-2005, 16:28
for quaif money, i'd be talking to Sadev ;)

Retail £6k, but i can sneak one for about 4.

KingStromba
05-06-2005, 16:32
I woner if a standard Williams with a sadev would beat this car with throttle bodies down the strip. Id say it would be close.

BenR

sequential box's are lovely, but they dont turn spritely cars into super cars.

KingStromba
05-06-2005, 16:55
So the clio cup cars have 180 BHP and they weigh about the same as a road car, yet they will do 0-60 in about 5.5 secs. :D

Id say its down to the box.

Mark_Ritchspeed
05-06-2005, 16:58
Yes, but to do that I would guess the final drive would be exceptionally low and limit the top speed to around 110mph or less.

So when they say they can do 0-60 in 5.5 and a top speed of 140-150 (not sure exactly) you can bet your arse that is with different final drive ratios.

BenR
05-06-2005, 16:58
under a ton with driver.
slicks, lsd, 190bhp......about 11 secs to 100mph.

not all down to the box, but it does help.

but 150bhp, i think not.

lagerlout1
05-06-2005, 16:58
The Clio Cup cars are 190 + and weigh about 950 kg. Yet they are reported as doing 100 in 10.5 secs. Can only be the box that does it surely?? There are Clios on here with a similar (better?) pwr/weight ratio that couldn't touch that!!!

Doh, posted at the asme time Jonny. Never though about LSD and slicks....

KingStromba
05-06-2005, 17:01
Even with slicks 0-100 wouldnt be near that with a road car on standard box.

i'm getting used to that white thing in my rear view mirror.

It is now en-route back to Manchester after we towed it as far as we could, before we were worrying about the box damaging other things.

BenR
05-06-2005, 20:09
you were towing it in gear!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

y0z2a
05-06-2005, 20:11
with the clutch down obviously.

thats what mehdi wanted to do to get it home. The box was ****ed anyway, so wasn't going to wreck anything else.

/y0z

BenR
05-06-2005, 20:12
he stood on the clutch the whole way!!!!!!!

VIPERONE
05-06-2005, 20:14
how did you tow it?? with the mark one rope, or Aframe?

y0z2a
05-06-2005, 20:20
mark 2 bungee tow.

Towing can dubious at the best of times!! lol
speaking of gearboxes.. i have solved my bracket problem with some bastardisation..
off out to remove the steering column.... and weld the ****ing thing.

Its now back in Manchester, and i'm £130 lighter. Quite stumped on what to do with the box though, do i go Kangoo, do i risk willy......?
Mark how is the Kangoo box holding up? Do we have any gearbox experts on here?

BenR
05-06-2005, 20:33
find a cable speedo gearbox wiht the bolt in diff, not circlip...that should hold the power.

clean16v
05-06-2005, 20:39
Now is this just a rumour though? So what if the diff is bolted in? That doesn't mean it'll take the abuse does it?

Mark_Ritchspeed
05-06-2005, 21:14
Kangoo box is holding up well for me so far, but it hasnt had much use as yet (200 road miles and 1 hour on track). Although for your application and the power its got,the gearing would probably be too short . Remember yours is going to have something like 40-50bhp more than mine and a load more torque.

For competition use I reckon its going to be pretty good as 2nd-5th are all very useable, but it will only pull 55mph in 2nd now as opposed to about 63mph before. (Speedo readings)

Also, I think I am actually very easy on gearboxes in general and the only reason the other one went tits-up was because of the struts pushing the shafts too far into the diff.

My old Willy box was still going strong at 90k miles with 4 years of track-days under its belt.

you can put a cup box in.. but you will need to buy a digi speedo kit from ritchspeed...just another option.

2 live
05-06-2005, 22:18
already suggested that mate...run it thru the all singin all dancin ecu..should be a doddle

like u say tho...jus needs a stack dash or similar

mehdi mate tbh.i think u can only try a brand new willy box....if it fux up in less than 12 months..its warranted anyway lol

and if u wanna get it brought over here il do it, but i want u there too , so when summat else breaks i cant be held responsible, as iv already explained

Well the car is not mobile at the moment, the diff has locked the driveshaft out. I may unhook the shaft and get it mobile again as i could really do with a hand from the gurus. There is a company that has been pointed out over on Cliosport that can fit Gripper diffs, and change the set up of the box for a decent price so will contact them 2moro.
2Live, this warranty, will it still apply to me? Im not expecting the boxes to last past 10k at the minute!

Does the 172, cup etc box have a bolt on diff or circlip? Also, i'm gonna speak to Team Think, as i'm sure they had a strengthened box option.
Cheers for all the usefull replys guys, keep them coming! Would be seriously lost without a few peeps on here over the last few days!
