View Full Version : What tyres?

The hybrid has managed to munch its way through some tyres so I need some help in picking some new ones. I really need to find some that give a decent level of grip in the wet, though also obviously in the dry, as my current ones are absolutely terrible in the wet.

So, what would you suggest? Also what profile tyre (they are going on willy wheels btw)?

Not keen on the sound of 185 55, lol. I've had a bit of a look around and it seems that the ones to go for are the Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3's (newer asymetrical ones aren't av availiable in that size yet), or Michelin PE2's.

Has anyone run either of them and if so whats your opinions? I'm leaning towards the F1's at the moment as they seem to be shit hot in the wet from what I've read.

i have f1,s and love them wet or dry. never run the pe2,s but heard good things and always liked my mx pilots by michelin.
comes down to price also.
f1,s will grip loads and are cheaper michelin,s tend to wear better..

I ran F1s on my mk2 clio and they were great in the dry, but I duuno if I just drive too hard but kept loosing it in the wet??

michelin exaltos(sp?) are supposed to be rated quite highly, but I've never run them

does anyone run 205's on 15's good/bad idea?

ive jsut upgraded to goodyear ds3s on the front and can safely say there amazing, plus with the extra grip there is less chance of wheelspin so they last longer :P gonna get 2 more for the back soon!

not a good idea as will make then less responsive than 195,s

if you need more width better to go up a rim size and run 205/40 16,s etc

or 215/40 17,s. or even better 235/35 18,s proper tyres.

but if your running below 200bhp 195 50 15,s are best.

You really can't go wrong with F1's mate, I run them and no other tyre comes close for the money imo.

Hi

Nice to see another edinburgh member. I went to kwik fit with a print out of the prices from mytyres. They price matched the tyres to that. F1's went from £80 each from kwik fit to £34 each once price matched.

I do hate kwik fit but saved the hassle of getting them delivered and then fitted.

Mytyres dont seem to have The goodyear F1's listed any more and I cant say anywhere elsesells them much. Are they obsolete?

Nah it was the Morningside Kwik Fit. They had to order them but that only took a day.

Yeah sold the Williams, looking at getting a track/weekend car. I go to Heriot Watt Uni so it was normally parked there. Its funny, now its gone more people want to ask me questions about it

See you around

Michelin PE2 for me, always will be, tried loads of others, especially the v tread type, didnt think the Michelin would be as good as it is, but my cornering speed is only governed by my bravery

they are excellent !

Always creates a fuss this thread!

Im on Eagle F1's GSD's at the moment.

Previously used proxes.

Tbh in the dry I cant really tell the difference between the 2 brands but in the wet the 2 are chalk and cheese.

I run 195/45/15

I always say this, ive run 185/55/15 before but the difference in grip is almost unbelievable.

195/45/15's grip unbelievabley well. They direct so so well, its amazing. They totally transform the cornering and grip capabilities of the car. The lad who had the hybrid on here, K reg, with the renualt 19 phase 1's (what im running) will vouch for the performance improvement.

195/45/15's - You will NOT be disappointed :D

Plus theyre cheap! Not cheap shit just cheap because we are on 15's! So at £50 delivered by MYtres who cares if they only last 5000 miles!!

However they have their down sides and they are ridiculously harsh so if your after comfort then these arent the way.

:o :o

So why are 185/55/15's more expensive? I would have thought that they were a more "run of the mill" standard tyre size rather than the lower profile tyres but still more expensive. It doesnt make sense???

Plus I have standard willy rims would a 195/45/15 fit?

My friend has 195/50 R15 Michelin PE2 on his Williams. He says, this tyre is excellent!

I use 195/50 R15 Toyo Proxes T1-R on my Williams. This tyre is brilliant on dry asphalt (rather good on extreme hot surface too) but it's not so good on wet surface (better the T1-R than T1 on wet asphalt, but not so good as Michelin PE2).

Not in anything less than a 17" at the moment though.

Will probably get them next if they come out in our (proper ;)) size - but seeing as the GSD3 didn't I won't hold my breath...
