View Full Version : engine mount
if one of the engine mounts is knackered, what kinda noise (if any) should i get from it?
ive got a feeling that the one on the drivers side has given up and the rubber has pershed. Most times when i pull away i get a knock from that area, and if i go over bumps, rough ground etc it also sounds. it has got worse over the weeks and just wanna try to figure out what it could be.
Its just passed its MOT so hopefully that should eliminate anything to do with the suspension/wheels...... in theory?!
Open bonnet, rev car.. does engine move?
Or, if the rubber has perished, then yea.. it needs replacing.
Can't see how it makes banging tho with just one mount gone? All 3 of mine were buggered and I had no banging unless I jerked the clutch/took off quick. Bumps weren't a problem really.
could be a ball joint mate, if the noise is coming from the front jack it up and with your hands at quarter to three try to rock th wheel if it moves excessivley chances are yor ball joint goosed giving you a knocking noise, im no mechanic but it would eliminate ball joints.

I'm with Kendo. Sounds more like a suspension knock to me. Check balljoints, top mounts (quite rare) and also subframe mounting bolts for a start.

Yea, but not loads.. it's noticable if it's too much.
Think it should move about an inch or so on acceleration.
When my mounts were buggered, the engine moved loads on idle.

What sealant do you use to tighten the mounts mark?

Polyurethane sealant, not mastic which will fall straight back out. Proper poly sealant is about £4-5 a tube, but its well worth it.

Any decent motor factors should have it in stock.

Do you need to do that?
I find the HP one really good.. very solid.
