Ok, soon I will be back to car ownership and I am ready to take on whatever it throws at me and fix things myself. I have most basic tools but dont have things like a proper spanner set etc.

What, in your opinions, are 'must haves' and 'very usefuls' to have at hand for working on Clio's? What toolsets do you like and use most?

big breaker bar! :D

good sockets(mm) - 19 18 17 16 13 (deep) 10 (deep)

Good ratchet

Trolley jack

I probably use those items the most

a comprehensive spanner set... machine mart 15quid iirc. goes all the way up to 22mm and 1inch.

probably my most use set is my deep socket set, again from machine mart, i use these more than normal sized sockets, as the deeps are 6 sided (so you wont be rounding anything off), and come in the common sizes you'll ever need for the clio.

decent torque wrench or breaker bar - again machine mart 15quid.

welder, hammer, brake pipe flange tool, set of decent quality torx sockets, punch set, and again the decent deep/shallow sockets, and a good spanner set, the rtchet spanners do come in handy from time to time also.

should be just about evrything u need lol.

Machine Mart...ok, thanks lads. Is the standard jack okay? Is it worth getting jackstands for working on the suspension/brakes etc?

my advice is start with the basic tool kit and a few really good tool catalogues.
that way you can see what available and buy each tool as you need it.

every time you do a job you can have a look and add the tools you require for that job.

Just buy a complete tool set, or even a complete garage off a mechanic who's retiring! lol nah like everyone else said, good socket set, good set of spanners, torx bits, allen key bits etc, buy as you need it i suggest, thats how i did it before i became a mechanic, oh yeah a decent set of punches for the driveshaft roll pin for When (not if but when) you need to take the gearbox out

and

on a serious note though, spanners, sockets, allen keys, torx keys, breaker bar, trolley jack and FBH should get you going then just buy tool as you need them.

Also as mentioned haynes is a must!
