Anyone know how much a new valver alternator costs nowadays?

(or the rough cost of a refurb'd unit?)

Where was that then Mr. Swervin?

(I'm asking as i'm getting the flickering red battery light, it might be the alternator, or it might turn out to be a bad earth... who knows... I just want the worst case, 'best' price lol.)

Watch out with ebay I bought what apparently was a 'as new condition' alternator from there was all shiny etc, turned out the stator and/or voltage regulator was fcked and it over charged my battery and sent acid all over my engine bay

Id stick with getting it brand new from a motor factors tbh

80 notes i payed from local motor factor.

I had te flickering battery light for a while, it wouldn't fade on and off...it'd come on and off brightly.

Left it toooo long, turned out to be the regulator. When it finally went it fried my ECU

Don't know mate. Just what teh garage charged, and that's what I paid for the two I've had on my other valver.

Was that for the part Swervin, or £90 inc fitting?

Crossers> Not pretty to have to replace ECU as well! :(

Just the part. Inc VAT. It's 3hrs labour if you get it fitted. Maybe less depending where you go.

Williams ecu's won't be a problem anymore. You can now just get a phase 1 valver ecu and buy a standard willy chip from gunner and ur done

What do I have to do in order to change the alternator? It doesn't look like it is in a mechanic friendly position!

It's not too bad, can do it in 2 hrs.
Bonnet off, headlight out, then its just the bolts and brackets around the alternator.
Best advise would be to get a haynes manual, it's pretty good on this.

Yeah as mattbrown says, bonnet off headlight out.

Some will say there is no need to take bonnet off but DEFINATELY makes it easier.

7mm allen key for the alternator belt to slacken off. Seem to remem that was a bit of a bitch to do. Its just a really fiddly job. Not difficult. I your half mechanically minded u wont need any manuals.

There was a really good post on doing this somewhere on here with pics. Dont know where its gone now.

Think about 2mm of slackness required on the alternator belt.

Ribblesdale auto electrics in preston sorted me out with one. £75 with exchange for ****ed one with 12mnth warranty. Or theyll refurb urs and have it look like new. Theyre worth a try if they do mail order maybe which i think they may do.

Done the alternator few times now and can honestly say it really was pointless taking the bonnet off, especially if you haven't got anyone to help you its a complete pain in the ass.

If you sign up as a member there a good guide with pics in the mbrs section

The only reason I didn't join up originally was that I didn't want my membership to be renewed without my consent every year, so I just stayed away from it. Might be worthwhile as it's coming up to MOT time and will probably need the guides.

I was more worried about the belt as it looked like a serpentine belt which goes on more than just the alternator. I do have a haynes clio manual so will try and dig that out later I suppose. Not relishing spending £100 just for this though. I always seem to be buying new batteries and alternators for cars. My wife's Golf has a brand new battery and alternator in it, and then the auto gearbox decided to stop changing gear automatically, so now that's just worthless lol. I know it's gonna cost me an arm + leg to get that sorted at VW grr...
