jerky speedo needle is usually fixed with a new speedo cable

yes
this occurs because as the mileage ramps up, the square bit in the cable wears slowly in the dial socket.... then becomes slightly loose...
to fix it dab a very small amount of bicarb of soda in to the socket and pour super glue in.. be quick and put cable in... this will be a temp fix... a more perm fix will be a new cable.
