View Full Version : Oil Pump Failure?

Last week on the way home the oil pressure gauge dropped to nowt. After cacking my keks and realising I had nowhere to stop, the thing then kicked back in but erratically. Sometimes not reading, sometimes reading but not moving etc, etc. I put it down to a feckered sender/wire.

But now some other problems are developing. Car has starting whine/screaching randomly and in pitch with the engine revs (not the PAS type whine), and it also sounds a bit grindy at idle.

When it got grindy the revs dropped. When it's not being grindy there's a clunky rattling and it sounds like there's a bag of nuts and bolts rattling round.

Meanwhile the pressure has been permanently there but lower than normal. so at idle it's been about 2 bar rather than the usual 3. Also it sometimes doesn't go up linearly with revs but stays at the same pressure.

Is the pump ready to give up the ghost for good d'you reckon? It all got much worse on the 8-mile drive home.

Get an oil and filter change done, see if the pressure gets better, hopefully not the oil pump, not the nicest jobs especially if they have killed the bottom end

Well, it's hopefully going to be recovered to the local specialist tomorrow morning, although it's not booked in until next wednesday. I just hope the RAC man doesn't try and start it or I'll have to get medieval.

usually when they go they go catastrophically.. oil starvation would cause extreme heat on the far shells, and would cause a btm end knock.

Almost sounds like something not spinning on its axis if you get me.

when mine packed in, the pressure dropped and with in minutes the b/e was knocking its bollocks off. also the oil temperature soared

Oddly oil temp has been normal. Ah well, we'll soon see. Could really do without any big bills though at the mo. :(
