View Full Version : rusty sills and mot
right as far as i am aware rusty arches cant contribute to an mot fail? is that right?
also how bad does the sill have to be to make it a fail? the lip (where jacking points are) on mine is fairly bad in one or two places, but it hasnt spread to the sill 'body' if you get what i mean?
anyone got any pics of what a failed sill looks like so i can compare it to mine
this was supposed to be a 'budget' track and weekend toy  and now maxiboy has put the link up with the fibreglass panels, must resist temptation!
have you any pics.
difference between sills and arches are that the sills make a structural area of the shell so any holes severe corrosion here is treated strictly.
i can get some pics on wed night
ive had a good look at it and i cant see any on the exterior of the sill body, just the lip
i jacked it up there once and it bent and crumbled a bit, so wont be doing that again!
well as long as there no holes it should be ok..
if its crumbling on the jacking point then the metal is very thin and rusty by the sounds of it. Look at the back of the sill...any holes or bad rust - it will fail.
if its within 30cm(iirc) of the mounting point for suspension etc then your screwed!

if there are any jagged edges then it will fail ie if your arches are that bad!

Yeah thats not good, take it to the right person and that'll be fixed for under £50
well its not as bad as in that pic, and no jagged edges on arch
i will get some pics up and see what you all reckon
the big problem is its within 30cm of the suspension mounting point as you can see in the pic, the surrounding structal areas for all suspension etc have to be spot on!
mine failed for the same reason and had to be cut out and welded
thats where they go that is (above) same with mine both sides but it went up a bit further than that. Only prob with welding round there is its close to fuel lines, tank and aux tank (which reno in all thier infinite wisdom desided to make out of plastic!! :P)
the reason they go there is down to the inner rear wheel arch pulling away from the outer....lets water into the sill and rots it out from inside.

easy enough to move the lines and sheild the tank tho! just depends on how bad the sill is when its cut back!
mine was pretty bad lol :(

that looks more sill related than arch, a rusty sill will fail everytime
