Being road legal I'd have expected some nutter to use em!

They work on an Exige why not a clio!

What's wrong with them? Just arrived this week...

http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j299/2stis/tyres.jpg

Can't give you any feedback on their performance yet as I haven't even got them on the rims, let alone run them. I figured I'd give them a go and see how they compare to the 032Rs I have.

I have them on my Clio.
But to be honest I don't drive on a day to day basis.
They get up to temp very quickly and they do wear quickly too.

But the grip..... Oh boy do they grip

Aha!

What are they like in the wet is my question?

I like changing tyres reguarly anyway plus these F1's are silly soft too

stevie_b
13-09-2007, 21:31
As long as you can get some temp in them and avoid large amounts of standing water you should be fine. The 032Rs are semi slick but still generate a lot more grip than normal road rubber in wet conditions.

Me no like standing water - well not in a van anyway

I love standing water.... especially in a 280bhp RWD car doing a four wheel drift lol. (Well more of a 4 wheel aquaplane on a cornwall road eek!)

I cant see them being very good on the road, I think they will just get ripped to shreds, I know they will grip like mad. Just to compair:
These are my paradas on my 1 7 2, they are 1000 miles old, driving B roads everyday, abused every other day. IMO they are too soft for british roads (I did a full report on CS last week)

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y24/orangeclio/102_0840.jpg

I can see R888's being even worse on the road.

J o n

fine for everyday use. I drove the GDI demo car about 1000 miles on these in most conditions (no snow unfortunately!) and they are fine. They have lasted 6+ full trackdays and almost 10k road miles! :O

I'm having some for mine when the PE2's are done with

You must drive like a girl? lol...

Anyway apparently the R888's are a medium compound. I've not tried them, but I have tried F1's and they'd last me 3 trackdays at max, including swapping them and everything, maybe they are softer than the r888's though, which is quite likely, as they are a road/wet tyre so need to be effective from cold.

14-09-2007, 17:45
F1's as in Eagle F1's? They are just normal road tyres, the R888's are a road legal slick???

I thought they seemed pretty hard wearing, I guess it depends how brutal you are on the throttle, but if you're driving smoothly on track albeit quickly they seem to last an eternity :)

Theres a bog standard 1.2 corsa c lives near me running these tyres on 17's lol maybe it's a sleeper,

Maybe he can afford to run them on the road..

There's a tyre test in Evo this month. Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric came out on top. Toyo didn't supply a tyre in time, but I doubt it would've trouble the top spot.

Will have to go home and read my copy - will be interesting to see how they think it compares to the previous versions (if they've mentioned them, of course).

Glad to see F1s are still good though 8)

Be aware that it is ONLY F1 asymetric that got the award, and NOT normal F1's or F1 GDS3 (or whatever they are called). F1 Asymmetric is a different tyre.

^^^ yeh brand new design but was one of the best priced and pretty much pissed on the rest as an all rounder...

The only thing they said was it was a tad noisy but I believe they said that about the current GSD 3's....

Based on a 17" tyre though - does it change the dynamics of a tyre much going up or down sizes?

white16valver
18-09-2007, 20:07
I think it might do.

Everyone who seems to rave about Toyos has them in low profile (like 45 or under).

Personally I think they're shit in 55s! lol

look very similar

Personally i think they're shit in any profile, great in the dry, okish in the wet, but utter shite in the damp.

That was running 205/45

Scougar
21-09-2007, 09:35
A lot of tyres are like that though as when it's raining the grease is washed away. In the damp and after it's rained the grease stays on the surface. Hard for any tyre to grip well with that.

I know but thats compared to uniroyal rainsports......awesome in any kind of damp, just a tad too soft in the dry tho, and F1's

I can vouch for the Paradas. Whosever that 172 is is up there ^ is clearly over-driving it.

This is what our Paradas were like after having been on the car for about 1000-1500 miles (most of which was when I had a blast over to west wales and was really giving it some, also includes a couple of runs on the Cat & Fiddle), and a day at Cadwell.

http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i5/Swervin_Mervin/Cadwell%20150807/DSC07276.jpg

The very slightest amount of graining on the shoulders and that's it. IMO they wear well, grip lots and are able to cope easily with track temps providing you aren't actually trying to kill them.

For you mate, yes. It wasn't that informative though, to be honest - they picked the eco version of the Yoko tyres, rather than those that would be good for performance for a start.

Just got back from hols (where I read my copy cover to cover) and lent mine to my Dad. As soon as I get it back...

I would agree with Swervin_Mervin.
I have these tyres fitted on my Williams and im really happy with them.
They survived a europe trip with a spa trackday and a visit to the nurburgring and performed well.
With 2500miles on them they have plenty of tread for this years adventures.
For the price per performance ratio there top.

I will be giving 888rs a try as my next tyre.
A friend has them fitted on his 172 and they grip very very well even in damp looking roads.

I use 888s on the road day to day at the moment on my 172. Transforms the car completely and are amazing on the road-just as good as they are around a track.

As for wear and tear, they have been doing really well.

Worth every penny and would much rather pay the extra cash for them over any other tyre. 8)

I will be fitting some to my williams before its MOT fo' sure.

Just out of interest, how much am I looking at to pay for a set of 195/50/15 r888's?

stevie_b
12-02-2008, 20:10
Just over 50 quid a tyre for that size in 2G compound. If you want super soft (SG compound) its closer to 70 quid each. I would recommend going for the SG only for competition use though, not general road use, as they don't last very long.

13-02-2008, 20:12
where can you get them for 50quid a corner like?! i can only find them close to 70quid a corner :(

wil lsee if they are any good for the strip.

I ran 888's for about 12k miles on my (approx) 500bhp RX-7 in all weathers, wear rate was about a half to three quarters of what you'd see from a normal Toyo:

Dry Tarmac - Brilliant, grip and traction are much better than normal road tyres. They are very loud, but tolerable. Up to a point they absorb imperfections very well, but as soon as you pass that point the whole wheel will bounce off the ground.

Damp Tarmac - Surprisingly good, almost have the same grip as they do in the dry.

Standing Water - Lethal, if you see a puddle on the motorway pick a line that keeps you out the barrier and cross your fingers.

Snow - Once there is an inch of the white stuff it is almost impossible to get up any sort of gradient, best avoided.

Ice - Ridiculously bad - 5mph 4 wheel drifts on roundabouts. Once you get a little heat into them they are fine, but from cold ice is dangerous.

In summary it depends where you stay and when you drive. If you stay somewhere warm, or avoid nasty weather, then they are a viable everyday tyre. If not then I'd strongly advise an all-weather tyre, or having two sets of wheels so you can run 888's for summer and winter tyres for the cold/wet months.

For 1/4 mile use the sidewall is a bit firm (so launches aren't great), but traction once rolling is really good.
