is the gearbox from a 2.0 16v megane to suit f7r the same as a williams box?

i need a new box for the 172 engine but undecided whether to use a 172 box or this one?

how much different is the 172 unit to the williams? ie ratios etc as im led to believe they mount up the same?

all old school JC5 boxes will fit the williams ie:

laguna jc5
megane 2.0l jc5
clio 172 mk1
clio 172 cup
volvo

what you need to do is obtain the 172 mount and modify it. i know how its done so the mount balances the engine perfectly.

that however is a gunner trade secret :P

awww no fair :(

whisper it to me

well i am having a right do making this decision, do i repair the casing on the valver lump? or buy the jc5 that the seller has no idea of mileage? or do i crack on with other jobs and wait for a 172 box to pop up?

That would be great gunner, as I'm looking to get the 1 7 2 mount as well (and would need the modification?)

I had a similar problem.

I decided to get my Williams gearbox refurbed with all new seals/bearings/synchros.

If its just the casing you will need to have a specialist crack it open, fix the casing, then put everything back in. Once cracked open though there is a lot of stuff that needs replacing!

Renault sell two kits I believe, first one is about £69+vat that's for seals and synchro's (plus other stuff that needs replacing when its opened). The second is everything, bearings, seals, synchros and sells for £190+vat.

To have someone strip, inspect, fix, rebuild is going to cost about £175+vat in labour (plus the price of kit above). So your looking at around 250 or 370 + vat to have your box fixed and rebuilt. While its being rebuilt you may as well plump for the full kit which includes all new bearings.

If it's only a valver gearbox you have at the moment, then why not just replace with another valver gearbox? It would be a false economy to have it rebuilt I think.

If you buy the jc5 box then you may well have the same problem above anyway (it needing a rebuild).

right well i have come to a decision......

im not gonna jump in and buy a box just yet, i have LOADS of other stuff to do to the car before the engine can go in so if a 1 7 2 box crops up in the meantime then i will get that, if it doesnt i will prob end up using the valver box or similar, time will tell
