View Full Version : Bad wobble under engine load??

Recently i've developed a bad wobble rather than vibration when the engine is under load. It seems to be worse at lower RPM in a higher gear when the engine has to work hardest.

If i'm on the motorway and at 70, slow down to say 40 then accelerate again it's really bad, shakes the car + gearstick etc, and the wheel jitters. It doesn't feel like your average wheel unbalance.

It's like a low frequency wobble and again it's worse uphill. It won't do it at really low speeds or if i put it in neutral and rev at say 70mph it won't do it.

Engine mounts seem fine (only one I haven't checked is dogbone, but it looks ok)
Driveshafts were changed not long ago.
Wheels were balanced with new tyres about 3 weeks ago.
Tracking is a tiny bit out (had it tracked about 1month a go)
New wishbones + balljoints not long ago
Don't think discs are warped but does it when driving normally anyway
Wheel + hub nuts ok

Anything else I can check or recheck as it's making motorway driving a nightmare!! Also this may sound daft but it seems to get worse after it's been driven a bit?

Any help appreciated!

wheel bearings aren't very old (i'll check for play tomoz) and there was no play in the CV joints when I put them in a month a go.

Ok discovered this today. The question is why is that manifold heatshield so far back that it's touching the gaiter? I actually noticed that a while a go but thought it would settle back once the car had been dropped! DOH. Luckily it's an quick easy job as it's not the gearbox side!

Thanks for the help :)

edit "Partial seizure causes a strange "pattering" sensation through the suspension. It is caused by the joint overheating, which in turn is usually caused by the outer joint gaiter having split, allowing the joint to throw out its grease." (wikipedia) It mentions only the outer joint but does the same apply to the inner one too?

looks like it could

but why does the exhaust sit like that?

Has this been resolved?

I seem to have developed exactly the same thing :?

Higher revs is fine, higher speeds are fine - acceleration fron 50mph however means that it feels like a wheel is massively unbalanced and is going to throw me off the road

Problems could be driveshaft failures...

I had a similar problem -

i would drive on the motorway would be fine.
Then would slow down.
Speeding up again would cause the car to shake violently moving me in my seat!!! - although road contact never was an issue. Usually 50mph+.

Turned out to be a driveshaft failure on drivers side iirc - i had both changed.

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooo :(

I guess the only way to tell if it was is to remove them and have a look?

Not sure I have the skills to do that  lol

Get the car jacked up and see if theres any movement in the driveshafts. Pull the drive shaft towards the wheel and see if it extends or soemthing - thats how i diagnosed mine - Without taking anything off.

Cool, thanks for the tip - will have a look soon! :)

mines doing somthing similar, but not really voilent just wobbles :S, bet look at getting them reconned!

You can re-con driveshafts??

Matty86

think reno do an exhange...

if you can get the bearing kits you can recon them yourself

That sounds like it would be a challenge for mechanically useless me lol

Ok i just did an oil change on mine, while i had the car up the inner gator showen in the pic above was actualy off and just free on the drive shaft!

so i have found the source of my wobble anyway :P

does the joint need to be packed out with greese as it looks quite dry.

I would reckon so, but I'd await someone competent to confirm this before you do  LoL

Allan

packed it out with bearing grease and put the gator back on, 99% of the wobble is gone, get a little up around 6500 rpm in 3rd but other then that its all gone now :D

Hi there, yes I sorted mine with a spare driveshaft I had. White valver it's very easy to change the driveshaft, you'll manage :)

Allan, glad that sorted it, the wobble as wiki mentioned is the joint getting too hot, however the reason all the wobble isn't gone is that;

a) either a bit of dirt is trapped
b) one of the bearings is partially siezed

aye, i will source one at some point, but for now its not bad, you cant feel it unless i go to the limiter in 3rd.

just got all new engine mounts today and the r19 box mount so next to go on is that lot :D
