i had an oil and filter change the other day and they put fully synthetic in it, not sure what grade probably 5w30.
oil pressure in normal when cold, up top bout 6bar however when she is hot the oil pressure progresses up when i boot it, however when it is idling and hot the oil pressure is just above the bootom bar, but it picks up quickly when pulling away, to aprox 3bar at 3k ish. have they put a too thinner oil in my car, as i thought i should have 10/15 40 but they (garage) said to put fully synthetic oil in i.e. 5w30 0w30 etc.
is the oil in my car ok?
cheers Jamie

sounds spot on to me that. mine does that now and I was also like yourself slightly concerned! lol

should be reet that fella, top it up with 10w 40 when it needs it if the pressure starts getting too low for you. once warm mine is about 0.2 bar at idle if that helps and about 4 bar on the motorway doing over 80... ahem

sweeeet mate, sounds exactly the same as mine. was a bit concerned at first because of how low it was idling. what shit me up was i was booting it and went a little above the speed limit so when changing up jus knocked it into neutral and upon looking at the oil pressure i shat it lol. cheers mate.

lol, yeah, I was the same... it's never been like that before so I flapped a bit too first drive... lol

Nick changed the oil pressure settings on mine (something to do with the bearings), so i run high oil pressure, so i cant remember the correct readings, but different oils run vastly different guage readings.

Think 5w30 is on the thin side. But as long as the needle reads above 0 to 1 psi at idling, that sounds about right. Also don't forget to check the dipstick every weeks or so, to make sure you're not losing oil too fast. I think mine does at most 1 litre every 5000miles.

Mine stays at 3bar a lot once up to temp (80-120c).

When oil cold tho, it goes to about 4/5. (More 4)

are you sure it was a 5W-30 and not a 5W-40 they put in

cos the only engines that need a 5W-30 is the Ford Zetec engine...

Jamie.

had a chat with them today they said it was the 0w 30  i think that is a bit thin, however the engine seems to be running smoother and accelerating quicker?! the engine idles at 2-3 psi (little bars) and spends most of its time at 3bar ish when normal driving. had a chat with the fellas that put it in and they said it was fine?
although most other peeps on here seem to say that their engines idle at same pressure as mine when hot too :?

what does every1 else think? just change it for 10w40 p/s or leave it, bit worried bout it. cheers

personally id say a 0W-30 was a bit on the thin side for these older Renault engines, in fact no other engine really needs something as thin as a 30 apart from the Ford Zetec engine, not in this country anywayz

email sales@opieoils.co.uk ask their advice

it probably IS faster due to less resistance from the oil, but is it at the expense of lubrication ?

had a chat with KS and he has been really helpful, just gona change it, cheers for the advice Brun. it has been taken under advisement!!!

well i work @ Motor World mate, and the only 30 rated oil we sell to customers goes into Zetec engines

No way on earth I would be putting a 0w/30 in a Willy engine. Stick to a good quality 10w/40 fully synthetic.

In fact , not many engines are supposed to run on a 0w/30. I dont know why their are so many on sale in the UK. Even the Zetec is only supposed to run on a 5w/30 for cold climates.

No need to go down to a 0w or 5w with our climate IMO.

if you take it easy it should be ok, jus dont thrash it about

It'll probably be ok for a short while, but as the engine temps increase, the protection offered will be going down. Get it changed as soon as you can though IMO.

Yeah its strange the garage even stocks it. Its surely for places like scandinavia and iceland!!!

Tell them you want the change for free. There mistake they put the wrong grade in, get them to change it for free, and a new filter too. :D

Should be fine now then. At the very least you have got what can basically be described as a free oil flush.

Should be very fresh inside the engine now.

Thats a good point, probably cleaned all the shit out nicely

realised in work today, the ONLY cars that are supposed to run on a 0W-30 are some of the new Audi/Volkswagons

it actually says on the bottles that its made for them

jamie when u say it idles really low.how low should they idle?when mines d=been drivien and warms it idles at slightly above 0 and its on about 3 at 3k revs thought this was about right

Jamie.

Brun, yea all new VW, Audis and some seats use 0w30, its the long-life oil when they only get serviced every 20k.

Scot, as every1 keeps telling me every engine is different although when i first got it it idles when hot at about 0.7 bar (ish, didnt really pay too much attention) which i was happy with, however with that 0w30 shit, it idled at 0.2, the second line above 0 bar, very very low, which made me feel uncomfortable, the oil also warmed up very quickly and the oil pressure was constantly low. with the 10w40 in it takes much longer to heat up, and sits at 0.7/0.5 bar ish whe hot and idling, but the oil has only been in a day and i havent really paid too much attention to its specific reading when hot, just the fact that the oil pressure is not really really low and i am more comfortable.
also after talking to several people they made it clear to me that however we may all have williams' they will all run diff oil pressures and temps, as long as u think it is running healithly then all is well. if u are not confident i was not, fookin change the oil!!
