anyone ever tried doing this?

Need to know if standard replacement parts like the synchro rings, bearings etc are all available from reno or a gearbox specialist?

yes there all available but not sure if the specialists use renault or a gearbox parts supplier as renault seem to be expensive and some gearbox bits are universal.

renault still sell rebuilt boxes so try and work out what you need before you buy any bits. as i imagine if you have gear sets broken it might soon be cheaper to buy a box.

Renault charge 450+vat+exchange unit for a reconditioned box I believe, and comes with a 12 month warranty.

To be honest I can't see any gears being broken, just the selector possibly and I know some of the synchro rings have gone.

strip it and see. but theres quite a lot to stripping and rebuilding boxes.

should be now problems on parts as a few people still offer a rebuild service. i had mine done.

while its apart upgrade to the 172 bolt in circlip as well

Can you give me the details of the 172 mod to circlip please? apparently the diff goes quite a bit on these gearboxes if slicks are used and the curb is driven over (on track).

Always struck me as not being too technically difficult and some people certainly suggested it shouldn't be.

However the same people also pointed out that getting the casings open is the single biggest twatty thingn in doing them and that it's not worth doing yourself unless you really want to.

I still wouldn't rule out doing it myself though.

Wouldn't mind trying it myself, was talking to Allan (off here)'s dad who used to rebuild land rover gearboxes and apparently it's easy, just a case of using a hub puller to pull everything off, then pressing everything back on in the correct order.

Yeah Chris H said most 'boxes are easy but that these ones are complete tw4ts :P

the circlip bolts too the diff outer casing. think you can buy the circlip and get the diff drilled and tapped to correspond

my mate took a 5 turbo box to bits before and he said bits flew everywhere so scrapped it

maxiboy, who did your gearbox rebuild for you? You had an LSD fitted as well didn't you? Been looking inside this gearbox and starting to think i'd rather get someone else to do it, lol.

you need special tools because as mentioned above, bits fly everywhere
