I have a 1.8 16v engine, and wondering how much oil I should be burning or loosing over the course of a month?

It seems to go from max to min in that period on the inside gauge (quite progressively, not full then nothing as some members have observed on there gauges.).

Grrr... no edit button

Should be losing, and not loosing.

About full to halfway on my gauge in about 3 months. I don't really thrash the engine much these days though.

Mine goes down a few notches over the course of a month - depends if I've done any high speed runs or not.

If I do Stoke to Essex in about 2 hours ;) then I'll need to top it up the morning after I arrive lol

For info I use silkolene synthetic pro (from opie oils).

Reckon it's too thin?

Too thin, too expensive.

lol

I use 5w40 - my engine likes it :)

Quietens down immediately after starting, doesn't get too hot on a high speed run 8)

and it's cheap from the Stealers lol

My engine seems to very rarely burn any. I can do several thousand miles with almost no loss.

never once had to top up my old valver between 5k mile changes, but it used about 1/4 drop on the in car gauge in that period. not sure what it does now, mike?!

ULF never used to burn a drop. Then it sprung a leak and went through about 1l every 1k. Not bothered fixing the leak and now fitted a decat so it loses/burns the stuff a bit more noe.

Incidently, I can't smell any oil burning or see it from the exhaust.

Thanks for your experiences guys :)

I bought it for my 200sx, but whilst I was running halfords fully synth too flush out the majority of the rubbish for a few weeks I then sold the car before I got a chance to put it in. So since I had it sitting there I just used it as top up oil. So that's why I bought the 'expensive oil' because I had a 280bhp engine to protect along with the turbo.

Ahh, well that's different. I always imagined Jap stuff to be more finely engineered and therefore requiring of higher quality goods.

Not like this french tat.
