View Full Version : Broken Box, Any Advice?

Hey chaps,

I’m pretty gutted as on Saturday I was heading to work, when I came across a bus travelling the opposite direction on one of the single-track country lanes where I live. Having realised I needed to reverse I slotted it in to reverse, travelled backwards for about 10 meters before hearing a rifle sound from the box, which was followed by me grinding to a halt. Basically the gearbox has completely seized, leading me to think it is shagged.

Having read around the various threads I think my 2 options will be to:
A) Take it to a specialist to re-build the gearbox
or
B) Source a non-broken gearbox and get a decent garage to fit it

Basically, what I’m asking in a roundabout way is:
What have other members done who have had similar box breakages?
What are the costs of the 2 options likely to be? and
Was the J5C (think that’s the box’s name) specialised to just the Williams and how hard might one be to find?

Any help would be appreciated as I really want to get her back on the road ASAP.

Thanks,
Doug

depends really on how long your really thinking of keeping the car.

new box around 550 quid

rebuilt box 90 quid plus parts

secondhand box 100/150 quid.

all will need fitting at around 150/200 labour.

they are around secondhand but they all have done similar mileage and you don,t know who,s been trashing them

if you keeping the car get it rebuilt
