Hi my clutch cable snapped last nite as i was changing into 5th, i thought the pedal had snapped with the cracking noise it made.

Ive managed to get a new 1 for £15 but was wondering how easy is it to fit? and how long should it take to change?

Im going to get a genuine 1 at the weekend, but i needed to move my car today and it was the only place that had a cable, and aint driving with no clutch as had to drive a mile when it went and made a nice grinding noise so would rather use a cheap cable for now till i can get to Renault lol

So how easy is it?

never actually replaced a clutch cable myself (my cables dont tend to snap for some reason :P )
but from people ,i heard it might be a right bitch to
get it right . i am sure someone will confirm soon :?

hi mate easy to do if a little fiddly. no tools needed just little hands. unhook for pedal if still attached try a piece of sting and remove then tie new end and feed back in. hook on pedal. then feed it down and behind the steering rack then across and across the chassis leg and hook around the gearbox end

have a look in guides section, i have written a guide on how to do it. its very straight forward and easy, just a bit fiddly trying to push the lug thru the bulkhead and hook the cable over the pedal.

I NEED to get a backup clutch cable just incase my one breaks. Why do they always break at the start of a busy week? Never on a quiet one

ive got a bit of a problem!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I put the new cable in, following the guide.

But......... the clutch is still not engaging. (ie. the cable is to long) could it be due to:

a) being the wrong cable? which i highly doubt as they motor factors took my reg plate

b) could i of routed it the wrong way? meaning there is too much slack somewhere? and it should of gone round something

c) the new cable is faulty

d) something else i cant think off

Anyway im ordering a genuine renault 1 today and gonna have another go when i get it but at the moment im stuck without a car

There could be a problem with your pedal.

i also thought that too mat as when the pedal is set it will engage gear but if i let the clutch out all the way it makes the noise like when you tighten your handbrake and then it wont pull the cable as far as needs as its on the last notch if you get what i mean

I had the exact same problem, replaced the clutch pedal and it's fine now, clutch pedal is a knightmare job to do though!

Also could be down to a non-genuine cable?

Ive fitted a genuine cable and its still not right, its only letting it go in gear when it wants too, sometimes its ok, then other times it wont work, so am i right in saying that it must be the pedal then?

Ive just rang citroen for the clutch pedal and they cant get one till tuesday, anyone know anywhere else i could get one sooner?

incorrect routing wouldn't cause this problem, as the cable is still the same length, so as long as its clipped in at both ends, your not changing the length of the operating cable. so routing doesn't matter.

Have you correctly feeded the cable over the top of the ratchet? I'm guessing that if you've done this with a gen/aftermarket cable then your problem is a broken pedal/ratchet.

also, there shouldn't really be a diff in length between the after market and genuine reno cable... its just the genuine reno cables tend to be better quality and last a lot longer on the still clutches. thats the only difference.

so I would say its your pedal mechanism thats broken.

There doesnt seem to be any tension in the spring in the pedal so can i get just the spring or do i need the full pedal assembly?

Probably best to change the lot really, the teeth on mine were a bit worn aswell as the spring with no tension,

the spring on my new pedal was slightly different aswell, a little bit longer.

Good luck with doing it

Did you put it on with the spring on, or put that on last?

I left the spring off till the end cause the bushes kept popping off

And then it was a bitch to get the spring on

well its finally FIXED, after 2 cables and a new pedal setup from renault

OMG what a b**** of a job changing the clutch pedal was

The problem was the spring on the ratchet had no tension or not enough tension, anyway the willy feels amazing now after driving a 1.6 16v escort around for a week and as soon as i jumped back in the willy i smiled and couldnt stop smiling, it seems so fast after driving the escort
