How the fook do they work :?

in a nutshell=

soon as the desired boost level is hit, the spring or actuator allows the gate to open and let gas out

but what about the noise? do they attack to the turbo and manifold??

your on about the 'screaming noise', thats an external wastegate, internal ones (inside the turbo) dont really make that noise.

if you on about having one just for the noise, take my advice- dont bother. on my pulsar, soon as it started to scream i had the fuzz all over me giving me crap about it, but due to the turbo i ran, i needed it.

Think he's talking about compressor surge/stall, the pigeon cooing noise. Basically don't run a DV and have a big cone filter and it'll surge, when you snap the throttle shut the boost has nowhere to go but back towards the turbo where it goes through it the wrong way, stalling it. Nice noise, not good in the longterm.

On a turbo there is an actuator which is set to a boost level, when this boost level is reached the actuator opens the wastegate and the exhaust gases bypass the turbine and the turbo stops producing more boost.

yeah the fluttering noise^ how come its not good ?

Because the turbine in the turbo is spinning at X rpm and you rapidly slow it down by blowing boost the wrong way through it. Saying that, most of the R5 boys don't run DV's and they seem to do alright.

ah well only gunna run a cheap turbo to run the lump in anyway

I thought the butterfly dump valve noise was a special kind of dump valve used on high boost applications?

you get loads of different sounds mate, its not nessecaryaly the bosst. for example a hks bov makes a loud tsssssh noise where as a sheepdog bov makes a flutter noise

Yeh it does 8) It chatters when letting off at low boost and makes the usual whoosh when letting off at full boost.

Justin..

so does the bov makes that noise or is it compressor surge at low boost ?

How the fook do they work :?

You boost your engine, it goes "wutcoowodooaowoo" ( )

Then the girls at Maccy D's all bend over for you.
