View Full Version : VAG 1.8 Turbo engine in MK1 clio?

I'm sure i can remember reading about this on here a while ago now, either that or i dreamt it, but is it possible? Inparticular i mean the engine used in Audi A3 1.8T/S3's?

If it is possible, is there a place that anyone knows of that actually carry out this conversion?

I'll await the responses then i'll post the reason for asking! :P

If this engine doesn't fit, can you let me know what non-renault engines DO fit in a MK1 clio, APART from Volvo engines?

Cheers.

my ears Burning

Good i miss that car, i should have kept it, made it 4x4 and 430bhp

Its not the hardest convo in the world it just takes time. Mainly waiting for parts to come, mounts, steel, pipes,intercooler... ect

As you can see from the links thats how i fitted it. Cut the subframe to lower the engine, i could have mounted it higher but wanted the sump the same hight as the original Clio engine. That was probably one of the hardest parts but only coz it had to be accurate. onces the engine was in there the mounts were quite easy to make. and then the fun begins.

Driveshafts, intercooler, rad was easy as the vag pipes almost match up to the Clio Rad and the clio Rad is very good, never had a problem with mine. Also the Evo intercooler i fitted was the Nuts, Sooooooo efficiant and flowed very well.

I have been asked soooooooo many times about how to do this and no1 has tried to do it again (don't take that the wrong way) the parts are cheep but it takes time. It depends on what state of tune you take it too

160-180bhp
225-250bhp
280bhp or more.

if you run it on std engine managment you could use the Golf/tt clocks which would be cool. 8)

Flan i want to do this to my valver hybrid.

I currently have an F7R and i'm just sick of them now, it needs a new head as mine is shagged and i just really can't be bothered with it anymore. I love my car but i hate the unreliability, so i figure having an engine like this running standard power to start off with would be exactly what i'm looking for, as they are fairly reliable engines from what i hear, plus powerful as standard.

Obviously you've performed the conversion yourself and respect for that! What i want to know is if there's a company somewhere that can do this for me? I don't have the space or the skills to perform the conversion myself.

Also, why did you sell yours? Who has it now? I want it

cliokiz
18-07-2007, 14:08
Stan, i will PM you about this as i'm seriously consdering it. As much as i love the F7R i just need something more reliable and don't have the time nor the funds to keep it running, seems to break every few months!

cliokiz
18-07-2007, 15:36

They do the same conversion into Polo's and it can cost circa £5k iirc. It could cost even more into a renault depending on how much fabrication etc is involved. Companies like JBS Autodesigns and The Phirm are well respected for swapping this engine between VW's...

If you're struggling with searches, its also more often known simply as 'The 20VT' in VAG circles. Its a fantastic engine and has so much tuning potential, i'd imagine it would be fantastic in your car.

Smaller than an F7R/P as well, isn't it?

Anything that gives more room in that bloody engine bay is a bonus... lol

Do you know who installed that engine? Looks mint!

Do you have to lose power steering and convert to manual when you put one of these engines in?

i work for npower, which is owned by a german company called RWE AG, and i can confirm that it does indeed stand for what was posted above. Most people use Volkswagen Audi Group as its the most logical, and perhaps Volkswagen UK use it as it fits nicely. However as it is a german company the 'correct', original usage of the letters will be the german translation for 'LTD.'

i read about tht in Practical Performace Car a few months back, the number plate on the car in the feature made me smile like. speaking on conversions, has anyone thought of putting a megane 225 engine in a willy/valver? same sort of basis, but keeping it french and won;t it sit on the same engine mounts?

The VAG engines has pas pumps on them all i would require would be some custom pipes making up to fit onto the rack

Flan
20-07-2007, 10:57
Its easyer to sack of the Pas and fit a manual rack. I found the box was to close to the pas rack.

Good to see one on e R5, bet the flys. I wouldn't go the 225 mag route the box is massive iirc and its french lol

vag lump is smaller and lighter and more potential. But then if were talkin engines, How bout the Honda Lump, or just for a crease, Volvo T5

Scoff is taking a break from working on cars unfortunately mate :(

The 20vt conversion looks more and more appealing everyday

Flan
24-07-2007, 09:15
i recon it can be done for 4k including the parts but it depends on spec. 225 for example will be more as it has fly by wire  then it depends if you want a custom rad or the std one, used intercooler or a new one. Black std hoses's or samco, full exhaust or downpipe to std one...ect

then there's stopping it

bill.
24-07-2007, 15:15
think i'd rather spend 4k on a 20v turbo conversion than throttle bodies, Mmmmmm, wonder whens best time to get a loan

cliokiz
24-07-2007, 17:37
Flan if you can do it for 4k, including all parts, engine, custom mounts, everything etc, then you might just have £4k in your hand lol

It would need to be a confirmed £4k though with everything totalled up etc.

Lemme know because if you can do it for that price i'm very interested...

Clio_GTT
25-07-2007, 18:55
4k is a bargain, the bb turbo kit costs something like that but doesn't have the same amount of potential.

The vag engines have good boxes that can take the power, theres the possibility of going 1.9 steel bottom end and running silly power or even 4WD with the right box and setup

stan
25-07-2007, 19:07
£4k is very much a bargain...

25-07-2007, 19:49
4k??

i was gonna buy a whole new car - but im tempted the VAG the clio now!!

is that roll in roll out? you source all the bits etc?

Yeah as above! let us know!

Its cheap because he doesnt have the overheads to worry about,....premises, insurance, bills etc etc etc

MAXIBOY
26-07-2007, 10:11
still i would want 4k to do one properly with the engine/gearbox supplied. i know the amount you have to spend on little bits to get it right.
