Coming back from fcs, was about 100 miles away from home, doing about 70mph on the motorway, put my foot down in 5th, and the clutch started to slip, revs rose, car stayed at 85mph or there abouts, ( or maybe it was spinning the wheels, with all the power  )

So i continued to stick at 85, tried it again, same thing happened, so i thought just stick at 85mph, and get it home, next thing i have a black polo, flashing me from behind, immediate thought was wtf, does he want some  , then i noticed smoke coming out from the back of the car, so pulled over onto the hard shoulder poped the bonnet, and called the rac out.

Got towed home, his theory is, i have a gearbox seel that has gone, its dripping/pissing oil onto the clutch and therefore slipping.

(Now i know its posted and not debugged mode i'll continue  )

So can any of you guys shed some light onto this, pass on your thoughts, do you think the rac man is right?

ps. whats the cost of getting it repaired, i pressume the gearbox seel will cost **** all, but the labour work will stupid?

can any garage do it, or is it a bit of a specialist job, with it being the gearbox?

cheers

suppose it could be either a gearbox or crankshaft seal. difficult to tell without an inspection. plus now you need a new clutch. so i would budget 300 quid for a garage to do it.

just walked tp the local garage who said it could also be the dif? so i may need a new gearbox?

all the gears select fine still, so is this possible?

do i definatley need a new clutch also now? its done less than 20k

£300 sounds ok though, was dreading it to be a lot more, you know how it is fear the worst

can,t see how the diff would effect the clutch or get oil on it. cant see what he means about the diff slipping though they usually just go. it not a limited slip diff.

the cover will clean up but if the plates covered in oil yes.

well its only the same as a clutch job but with a couple of seals also.

cheers maxiboy, you've put a bit more faith in it now, time for an uprated clutch then

getting it towed down to the garage later on to get it looked at proper, saying it needs a new clutch would i be right in thinking an uprated R5 gtt one from gsf is the one to get? retail at £69

ps. what bhp are they good for?
