Although I'm keeping the Clio road legal so I can drive it to the 'Ring (trailer fees are expensive on the ferries!) I decided I needed something to tow it around with in the UK. The Clio is loud and raw so I decided to go for something quiet and comfy, with lots of room for shifting round engines, etc.

Seems pretty good so far - I see why the E39 won so many accolades. Lots of electric gizmos, self dimming mirrors, cruise control, leather all round, very quiet on the motorway and very torquey, so should be ideal for towing.

In a straight line it would see off a Willy although despite them being billed as 'ultimate driving machines' I'm not sure they instill the confidence that I'm used to in the bends.

My mates 5.2.5i e39 used to get spanked by my old 1.8 16v and mine was real ****in slow!!

Nice towing motor though! Doubt it would see off a williams mind. :)

It has a six speed manual gearbox. Most are auto.

Well, Stevie has definitely pee'd on you trailer Bum Boys.

Even as a manual, though, it'll not be as quick as the Clio. It probably weighs about 1600kg! What age is it, Stevie - is it the early 150bhp 2.0 or the later 170bhp 2.2? Mind you, with a Sytner sticker in the back, it could have a 2.5/2.8 or 3.0 conversion!

Sytner's a BMW dealer in peterborough.

And in a lot of other towns and cities! They own hundreds of dealerships, including Alpina. And Frank Sytner used to be a touring car driver. If it's faster than it should be, maybe it was Frank's own car or something.

Performance
The RS4's figures are mightily impressive - 415PS from a 4.2-litre V8, 0-62mph in 4.8sec and a theoretical top speed of more than 180mph, but restricted to 155mph. More impressive still is the car's flexibility and ease of use in everyday conditions, so you're not forever fumbling with the six-speed gearbox.

I WISH...............What an awesome tow car!!! :D :D

Zollo

Nah, sod that - you need a 5-litre V10 with over 500bhp if you're towing...

Prefer the audi with its 4wd system.....

Have seen a guy turn up at donnington towing his caterham, started to piss down so he uncoupled the trailer (fully covered brian james one) and then went out in the audi and overtook everything it came accross.

Even as a manual, though, it'll not be as quick as the Clio.

But the 6-speed box is a clue that it is. That Getrag box only came on a couple of 5 series models.

Mind you, with a Sytner sticker in the back, it could have a 2.5/2.8 or 3.0 conversion!

Not quite, but you are the closest to its secret yet! Maybe I need to take the Sytner sticker off now as well, if that gives such clues.

Actually I just posted it up here to see if my latest disguise (a new badge from a 520) gave it a complete Q-car cloak of invisibility. On the basis that anyone with a Willy is pretty adept at spotting a good motor (which is why they have a Williams  ) I thought I'd see whether it hid its origins, and the result seems to have been pretty successful.

It's actually the one with the M62 4.4 litre 32 valve V8 engine...

Considering the only difference between the 540i and smaller engine'd ones is a wider kidney grille and different exhausts, we'd be doing well to think otherwise when it says 520i on the boot.

Sytners sticker isn't really a clue, btw!

Thats a damn nice towing motor! Definitely one up on me and Northy! I think I still win for boot space though

Sure. I wasn't knocking anyone for not realising it - the whole aim of it was to deceive

Not sure on the towing capacity summeh. I'll have to check the handbook when I get home.

Sorry to hear that. Actually mine isn't in perfect health at the moment either. Seems to have lost a lot of coolant over the weekend, although the warning light comes on before the expansion tank ever runs dry. Hope it's nothing too serious.

damn you... whats the boot space in cubic ft/meters then! mpg? tank capacity?

I couldn't find the boot capacity listed, but see that the E60 has 1650 litres and it said that was more than the old model, so think the Omega trumps that... although I do have a cunning plan to address this issue.

MPG isn't great either. I can get nearly 30mpg on a decent run. But the wife never really gets more than 25mpg out of it. Long-term average is about 27.

Fuel tank holds 70 litres. Enough for just over 400 miles.

lol yeah exhaust sheared in two after about an hour from my house. The AA sorted it though. Got some quotes for getting it fixed as it needs a new front downpipe (includes cat) and the garages want 230quid for that! Fook that will do it myself.

Think I get about 40mpg as standard not towing of course.
