If there is fuel entering the cylinders, and a spark is present....
Your left with compression.
Get the head pressure tested.

Leads on the right way around ?

Sounds like a silly comment but you put the fuel lines on the wrong way round? This one had me and Amir miffed for 2 days!

Ive tried the fuel lines both way round and ive made sure ive definatly got them right way around.
Can someone tell me what lead goes to which part on dizzy cap im sure ive got them right but just to make sure.
Would it make any differnce that the exhaust is not connected from the cat backwards, so its only currently got manifold, downpipe and cat on.
keep the help coming 8)

ok leads on the right way and its got good compression. the battery is fully charged.
It sounds as if its going to go but just doesnt.
im currently having to bridge the wires at fuel relay to get fuel pump working, at the moment as its not working by the key ?
any ideas why it wont start?
have you tried easy start to see if it fires on that first.

you've got compression, fuel and a spark and it won't start  , has to be the ignition side of it (check the dizzy cap and rotor are fine, check the leads are good and check the plugs)
Where were you getting the spark ?

easy start?
i checked spark at no 1 cylinder.
its got brand new leads, new dizzy, new spark plugs and new rotor arm
the annoying thing is is it sounds as if its going to but then doesnt?

no idea what easy start is, try taking the airbox off and spraying hairspray down the throttle when it's open. Are you cranking it over long enough ? Has it popped and banged ? It might be flooded maybe
easy start is a highly flammable mixture safer than hair spray that will ignite easily and is used to kick start engines.

Thought it might be similar to carb start lol
is this a phase two mate ?
get hold of a phase one ecu - problem solved i bet
hes tried two ecu,s the one that came with the car is fitted i believe. won,t run on either.
and they are phase one ecu's ?
relays are all ok ?

ive cranked it over non stop tell the battery went flat.
It maked the occasional pop and bang.
Ive tried two phase one ecus.
im currently having to do the fuel pump manually as its not doing it on the key,
the first time i turned the key it started for a couple of seconds then it dies.
could the timing be out?
how can i make sure the timing is ok?
if the fuel pump isnt priming that is one fault pal...do u have a alarm imobaliser on it ?
What have you done before it first stopped ????

im am getting fuel pump working though bye bridging the relay.
what do you mean by first stopped?
thanks for your help
ok, recheck all your loom wiring - especially where it goes into the relay box, see if any is damaged....
Get a very good / brand new battery and try that turing the car over....
Have you tried to bump start it ?
Timing check - you will have to consult the haynes manual for that one.
Do you have a alarm / imobliser on it ?

using brand new genuine Renault Battery. It has the standrard key in the glovebox immobiliser and alarm. To do the timing do i need to line up the TDC markings on the flywheel on the gearbox bell housing. Only things changed have been new Cambelt, Distributar cap, Spark Plugs, PLug leads.
Clio_GTT

Who did the cambelt for you ? Did it all line up perfectly ?
If you've got fuel and a spark it must be the timing, fuel + spark = boom :D
have you tried easy start wd40. needed it to start mine today

i will give the easy start a try.
The cambelt lined up fine with all the marks. and the rotor arm is at cylinder one?

crank sensor ???
done the ohm test in the haynes manual and it's ok but might just by a new one just for the hell of it brought new everything anyway (new module and coil, new lamda, new plugs, new complete dizzy cap set not just the rotor arm and the list goes on and that just to try and get the car started and no luck).
you have a good £10 of fuel in pal ?
i thought you got no spark if the crank sensor failed

had a full tank of fuel used about 1/4 trying to get it started i the last 2 weeks

thats what i thought.
have you tried starting it with a bit of wd40 or easy start sprayed in the inlet.

yes tryed that yestarday.
dimma16v,
Did it fail immediately after something was done to it? Such as drive to flood, replace something on the car etc.

yes i've also got the extra earth kit fit so the earthing is ok and the fuel is working got a fuel presure gauge fit in the engine with the PBV.
what happened when you tried to start on wd40
dimma16v
12-07-2007, 12:33
never used wd40 only used easy start
I had a strange starting problem last year and it was traced down to the ignition lock relay. I have never seen anyone else having the same fix though. You might want to check this out, just in case.

i'll gave it a go today
if i didn,t fire on the easy start then you have no spark or incorrect timing issues. as it always fires on easy start. so i,m guessing spark issues
What's this easy start you guys are talking about? Is it a product or a procedure?
dimma16v
12-07-2007, 12:51
timing should be ok got standard cams in at the moment lined up the marking on the belt and sprak was good took lead 1 out and look for spark and was ok
You have sparks on all 4 cylinders ?
well if it didn,t fire the easy start there something wrong. maybe the sparks not good enough under pressure.
purple easy start is a highly flammable gas used to help fire engines. usually diesels but can be used on petrols. used wd40 on the maxi. little blast on the filter usually does the trick.

been out to do more checks and got the volt meter out aswell can some go and check what volts you get from the engine fuel pump fuse as i thought it's supost to get the same reading as the battery or even a reading from yellow wire on the pump under the seat .
live on the fuel pump is around 5 - 6 v from testing mine friday mate.

what are the chance the ECU is F****D is there any way of checking it or can you take the ECU down to Renault for them to check it.
