In the back of my valver altenator there seems to be a thick wire screwed on with a 10mm bolt and then above that a brown push connector with a yellow and green wire in?

What do these do?

Should there also be an earth?

Yer that's all you need. Make sure you get the thick wire on the right terminal though.
I changed my altenator recently and the wire went on the other side of the fresh one. Nearly welded the negative terminal to the battery when i tried to re-connect it!

thick one is the main charging wire

the smaller post that takes an 8mm nut is for an earth wire, but the alternator earths through its body anyway. Its there for alts that are mounted on rubber couplings etc.

The brown plug has 2 wires, 1 direct battery feed, the other is to the dash light.

The alt output has to equal the battery voltage to turn the light off and thus start charging.
