when i fitted the passengers side drive side all seemed well untill i put the oil back in the box its now seeping out.

does the gaiter that coneects onto the box go a certain way?

I think you just need to line the holes up and bolt it up, i made the mistake of not doing it up very tight and ended up loosing all my oil so you might just need to tighten it up!

Not to bolt snapping tightness, but tighter than your mum.

Check the threads the bolts screw into as they have a habit of stripping if previously done up too tight.

will have a look at the is it the bolt that the threads strip or inside the hole

what do you do if the thread as stripped inside the hole?

live with the leak as I am doing on my mums sleeper cos I'm lazy

if the threads bust its a helicoil job.

Make sure the gaiter was put in flat and the metal ring inside it isn't bent as it won't seal.

what size helicoil will i need as i think this maybe the problem as one of the bolts just kept turning then coming loose again

I've got the exact same issue

my bolts don't 'feel' threaded, but they will only do up to a certain tightness (which is fairly tight!!)

oil just keep dripping out though :(

I take it helicoils are available from someone like gsf?

helicoiling is a machining job, well it was back in the day of stripping plug threads on series a engine
threads get drilled out and a helicoil inserted back , ie a tube with threads on the instead.

Maybe things have moved on from the 80s though

woulda tap and die do the job?

will it stop leaking when there done up tight?

how about coating the bastard in something like tiger seal?

the silicone/blue hylomar doesn't work.

A tap won't do it unless you use a larger tap and a larger bolt to match.

Helicoil is still a drill and insert job, as for size dunno, if you get it done let the rest of us knwo cos we're all to lazy to sort it

you got the plastic tray on yours still?

I have it on hers, I just take it off and drain the oil out of it every week or so.

if the hole is stripped, try a slightly longer bolt, which should then pick up some threads further down the hole just be careful not to strip the threads, also try using some ptfe tape on the bolt.....

An engineering machine shop, should be able to tap the stripped thread hole oversize, next size thread, screw and loctite a lenght of studding in (or a bolt) cut it off flush, and retap it to the orginal size.

Another method ~ I have used,is replace the bolts, with studs loctited in and use nuts to retain the cover.I convert all my gearboxes this way ~~ never any chance of stripping the casing  ,easier to put nuts on too  .In your case you would have to get a stepped stud.

that sounds like a good plan too

Have you def put the metal bit on the end of the gator on the right way? You can bolt it in either way but if you get it the wrong way round it won't press the rubber in when you do it up... if you did it wrong ud know thou as the oil would piss out...

I've only got 2 out of 3 bolts on mine and is doesn't leak  I was quite generous with the silicone sealent when I put it back on thou...
