These are basic questions im sure but im just being cautious...

When im removing heavy carbon deposits from the ports, combustion chambers and from the valves - the haynes manual says to scrape it off?
What kind of tool should I use for this? I obviously dont want to start scoring any part of the head.

Same for the old gasket material...what should I use to remove this?

After doing this, I then wash down and clean with paraffin??

On a side note, the haynes guide says the f-type engines cant be re-skimmed - i never knew this, is this definately the case?

Thanks in advance

they can be skimmed.

as for cleaning....well i'd use sand-rolls or something similar in a die-grinder

oh yes...you can skim them ALOT lol, you just need to compensate the timing.

Just find a company that has chemical cleaning such as carbostrip, it eats carbon so you can just hot wash/rinse it off and it'll be spotless....not nice stuff though, eats skin and anything carbon based.

Head face you can scrape then skim.

Valves you cna just use a wire wheel, it wont damage them and you should be refacing them anyway, just dont to the stems.

Am i right in saying if a head is slightly warped would it be a bad idea to get it skimmed?

surly if its warped you need it skimmed, else it wont sit on the gasket right, so it will leak!

You will need to re machine the valve seats for the megane valves i believe.

What can i use to remove gasket residue (exhaust and inlet) thats cheap and DIY?

a stanley knife or razor blade, be careful not to catch the alu with the edges of the blade tho, not that it matters too much on those gaskets.

to get the most out of the megane inlets you need larger matching seats/inserts as well

Although its alot of cost and not 100% needed in alot of motors.

I've just finished a new port profile that allows the 32mm willy valves to flow higher at sub 0.34" lift ranges than the 33.5mm 172 head (when modified aswell).

33mm valves are alot of money than can essentially be wasted.
