has anyone stripped there car and found a pretty big patch of rust on the drivers side rear arch, on the inside of the car? if they have, any chance of a pic? and sum ideas on how to get rid. thanks
common area from them to go mate.
Will see if i have some snaps

I would bond a zinc block on the inside of each arch..it is what ships use to curb rusting..somehow it absorbs the iron oxide

Scarificial corrosion because the zinc is more reactive.

yes thats quite right:
Sacrificial Zinc Anode
for example..
smart watermen know this fact and employ the use of sacrificial zinc anodes on their zinc-galvanized metal crab pots. With the sacrificial anode attached, the crab pot becomes the cathode. The result is that the anode will corrode (hence "sacrificial") and the crab pot won't. This effectively doubles the life of the crab pot.

So why don't manufacturers fit zinc blocks?
I have discussed this many times with friends as to why manufacturers dont do certain things to prevent cars from rotting/breaking down/things going wrong etc etc.
The simple answer IMO is that manufacturers COULD make cars indestructable but the simple fact is they wouldnt be in business if they did.
IMO cars are without question designed with a limited 'shelf life' be it however many years.
Your then forced to buy spare parts etc to replace worn parts.
I could go on!
Thats my opinions.
Good pictures there too, very good to know as my arches need doing really. Theyre just starting to go!

the main reason is cost, ppl want cars cheap but quality and all manufacturers need to make profit otherwise no point bothering!

I think my A4 has had some zinc treatment.
On some of the forums peoples cars get bubbling under the paint when the zinc reacts with the metal. It looks like its starting to rust but isnt. So not sure its as simple as putting a block of zinc on the car body.
audi are zinc treated as they have a ten year anti perforation warranty.
werent the first a4's all totally aluminium??

Good investment to strap a couple of these to inner arches i reckon.
scrub back underseal, weld a couple of em and coat everything in underseal.
Should double the life of the arches!

if you cover them .. will them blocks not work as good? .
and that 8 year anti corrosion warrenty is bull . if it gets stone chiped on arches water gets in and then rust..
i did arches before 8 year . i chould not claim due to not useing reno for the serviceing

mines gone in EXACTLY the same place :evil:
how much have people payed to have this sorted, wish there was a decent body shop around here :(
my quotes have ranged from £650 to £850 to get both sides cut and welded and painted back up! :(
need to find it cheaper, as its just not worth it, sadly!

Mines in bodyshop right now having an arch done £100 to £150. Hes a good chap so wont do a bodge job.
I went to the bodyshop today. Guy said its a waste of time just respraying the arches- rust always comes back though. Best to just wait till its really bad and get it removed and new metal put in or get a whole new quarter panel. Easy £400 each side but would last 10 years.

Thats what I though too,
but surely having 2 identical cars (body wise, shhh) will cut the labour? cut one arch, then move straight on to another ..etc..)
economies of scale, 'mass' production, bla bla
oh well

Well new panels should last at least 5 or 6 years. If you protect them ever more.
