you can,t run an engine in on mobil 1 its too good and does not let the rings bed in.

cheapo 10 or 15 /40 is ideal for running engine in. less friction reducers and detergents.

What do you think of that STP engine treatment additive - is it worth it

MAXIBOY

forte treatment is good but you need to run the engine in first.

Something just occurred to me, I always switch to synthetic oil on my new cars by second oil change. Maybe that's the reason why it take a few thousand miles for the engines to loosen itself. But then again, I have not had any problems with them, other then slow bed in.

engines always take time usually ten thousands miles to really loosen up. mobil 1 is so good i,ve known it stop rings running in. even had to restrip an engine for a customer and rehone it with new rings. used mobil 1 from new and it was drinking oil as the rings failed to bed in.

In my case, I mostly use Carlube synthetic (or some other economy syn oil) which is probably halfway between Mobil 1 and semi-syn. Mobil 1 is too expensive for my quick oil change habit anyway.

Theres nothing to loosen up....its 2007...not 1977

Once the rings are bedded in, job done.

whats your running in advice.

Get engine fully hot (as you always should). drive in as high a gear as engine allows, and give full throttle from low revs up to maybe 4500rpm, then allow to over-run. The full load forces rings into bores, and the over-run helps draw out "dirty" oil from ring land/bore area. This is why the oil should be changed after maybe 100miles.

Its no like 30years ago where tolerancing was crap on machined parts, and there were literally tight spots...or materials that werent subjected to todays advanced heat-treatment processes, and so needed to "settle".

The rings are really the only thing that need to bed in.

i have over run alot.. what does this mean?

step on accelorater till limiter then take foot off peddle?

over run is where the revs are falling from a higher engine speed, with closed throttle....e.g driving in 4th, getting to 4500rpm, then letting foot off throttle.

So for the first 1000 miles do you suggest not going over 4500 rpm or should it be lower than this

think stan means soon as engines running on the cheap oil, run up the road in like 3rd from 1000rpm upto 4500, let off and repeat a couple of times. then drive normally for 100 miles then change oil!?

Some web pages have said to do more engine breaking and avoid too much prolonged cruising at a set speed

over-run is pretty much the same thing as engine braking if you think about it.

and yes, cruising should really be avoided.
