I've ordered some aluminium to do this and rivet a plate to the roof as I've had enough of bloody sunroofs!

My questions are: how did you make the template? from the old unit? the black surround??

What did you use to seal it when you rivetted it? just some std silocone??

Cheers

I just used some old card I had lying around. Cut to size of sunroof hole. Then put that sheet over the aluminium and scribe around the cardboard template but adding an inch (or some other fixed amount) the whole way round. Then just cut out the alu panel along the line.

I used standard silicone sealant on mine too. Not really been out in the rain much though so I do wonder whether it still might leak through where the rivets go through?

I got a quote for£600 for a roof reskin...of considerably less for the ally sheet mod...suffice to say im off for the rivet mod...the sheet i have is huge..in order to give it strength and cover up the roof skin flex depressions. .. :-(

lol

nicely covered up with white vinyl and a renault diamond lol

not the way to go for a track car,..unless your budget allows

the hseet option is the most cost effective option by far lol

The whole roof is removed from the tops of the A,B and C pillars and a new sunroof-less version is welded on and sprayed

i just took the sunroof out, measured the hole and added something like 1inch all way round or there abouts, mine is rivited on and also bonded on with monopac sealer(same stuff which holds windscreen in) and is rock solid and dont leak at all, this is on my 16v trackcar btw so i wasnt going to looks, just cheap/light/easy! :)

yes u will also need to fit the ir plip unit--ok the sheets are rather cheap: here is the supplier:

Cool. What gauge would people recommend from that list?

MAXIBOY
17-05-2007, 15:01
roof is properly around 20 gauge steel. so maybe 18 gauge. the cheque plate is 14 gauge and thats quite thick stuff.

MAXIBOY

yes goes from the a pillar to the c pillar front to back but only between the roof rails side to side.

ive never used a rivet too before... what sort of tool do i need, and again what sort of rivets??

and how do i work the tool..take it its simple enough as the tool looked basic in halfords

MAXIBOY
18-05-2007, 12:00
yes mate very simple. just squeeze the handles together. as for rivets they go buy diameter and length. i,d say 3.5 mm diameter and long enough to go though the ally and roof fit a washer and still crimp up. maybe 15mm.
