My downpipe cracked couple of weeks back. Second time its happened now. I needed to take it off to fix it properly but someone welded it together at the join  haha

I had to use the grinder to get it off today. Here are some pictures.

Here is the crack!

Heres where it was grinded!

Heres where it was welded last time.

Here is a picture of where it gets mullered on just about every speed hump in the world!

Here's where it was welded together! YA BUGGER!

I am taking it to work tomorrow! I will get pics before I put it back on to show what I have done. Got a couple of mods in mind!

my new manifolds gonna rock - its just simply going to be some old smarties tubes pva glued together and coated in tin foil for extra bling 8)

so glad i never went for one of these, more trouble than they are worth

the reason they fail is down to no support as the standard manifold has on the manifold to block.

All the weight of the exhaust and engine rocking has to give somewhere.

Worst welding EVAR!!

Get a flexi section welded in :) Bit more expensive but will solve you heat and fatigue issue. It's that or weld your engine to the chasis
(you could also as suggested make up a support for the manifold to the block).

I think that one failing is more down to the damage it's taken.

We got this one from Italy. But weve had it a year.

I had a supersprint one - but i sold it on to Richy. TBH the supersprint ones are better but the Prowler / Powerful ones are easier to support due to the design of clamps....

This is the one on my williams 3 when it was new....ive tried to show the hanger i made

so what 4,2,1 manifold actually has a support built into the bloody thing? Do the designers just forget about these totally?

Here is todays work. Spent a good 4 hours buggering about with it! :D What a mess!
Here are some pictures of the progress.

Grinded the weld off of the split. I then hammered the two sections apart.
Here is what it started out like.

http://img404.imageshack.us/img404/2145/m6as5.jpg

Here is what it ended up like.

http://img185.imageshack.us/img185/566/t1pu1.jpg

There was some big holes as I had to butcher it go get it off. I cut 2 bits of SS plate and bent them into shape to weld on top of them.

http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/292/t2kg8.jpg

http://img185.imageshack.us/img185/871/t3dv2.jpg

These parts got pretty butchered aswell. This got built back up With weld. I then grinded it back and sanded it round.

http://img340.imageshack.us/img340/961/t5wu9.jpg

Here is the inside
I had to get all this weld out of the centres of the tubing. What an arse of a job. :D

http://img185.imageshack.us/img185/9780/t6zm8.jpg

Here is the main crack. This got welded up. I plan to weld plate over this for extra strength tomorrow.

http://img340.imageshack.us/img340/1039/t8nk4.jpg

Gave it a good polish aswell to try and make it look nice again! Came out quite well. Will give it another go tomorrow!
Here is the end result for the day.

This is a guy in Leeds, will make any manifold and a system to match it ~~ not the cheapest  ~ but the lads around me,that have used him for Rally system, swear by him ~~ He guarantees they will pass the mandatory MSA noise tests for Rallies

Tony Law are brilliant did the system on my mates MG ZR it sounds gorgeous. He won't do stainless steel systems though but the mild steel ones are very thick metal and coated will last for ages.

What about the prowler version?

northy

your going to struggle

There are only 7 Prowler manifolds in the UK - all sold from Ktec before they switched suppliers to supersprint.

And only one Powerful that im aware off todate that my brother imported from Italy last year.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y107/northy_com/DSC00830.jpg

This is the link for a site that lists the one we have

http://www.piecesauto-tuning.com/boutique/product_info.php?cPath=2_4004_4305_4409_4513&products_id=14322

There was a problem with these early manifolds not lining up to the cats correctly. Mine was modified by Blueflame to suit. The supersprint ones appear fine.

Wait until u have to split the down pipe from the manifold for any maintenance

did the imported manifold from italy fit on the car ok?

northy

But we are not far off fitting it all now so i will let u know asap

19-04-2007, 11:58
thanx northy , keep me informed :)

wat kind of modification did u have to make on yours to get it to fit, and how easy is it to order it from italy? my italian isnt very good :D

ours came from ebay - i came across that link when i was researching for you.

I have a new downpipe to cat piece made in the end by KTEC & Blueflame.

But most people have fitted these ok with a adjustable decat.

Ahmed Bayjoo
19-04-2007, 13:01
i think id prefer doing wat u did and get a new downpipe to the cat made.
an adjustable decat is ok , but come mot time and u need to put the cat back on its gonna be a lot of grief.

can u get a manifold custom made by powerflow or blueflame, would it be the same as the standard item, just stainless steel and lighter?

Couldn't split mine. Had to leave both pieces attached. was such a ballache.

I had these trouble's too Danny. I was a bit pissed off when i realised it was welded on the joint

Only place it ever leaked was around the flange when i had it, hence the weld!

I put it on last night! Went on a treat. All the way on. Put some exhaust paste on the join. Tightened up the pinch bolts I made and then let it idle for 15 mins. Sounds ace now. I dont want to get rid of my exhaust any more! :D Looks so nice because i polished it. Looked at it when i got home today. Just starting to cool down. WAs like a gold colour. sweet! :D
