Right chaps ive just changed my oil from 10w50 Semi Synthetic to
0w30 Fully Synthetic and know my engine it very tappety .. does this
mean the engine oil i just put in is to thin . When warm its a bit better but
still hear the tappets .. before oil change the engine was quiet ...

any ideas Cheers Darren

Thats not really the right grade of oil for the engine, but i always thought a thinner oil would quieten the engine more, so i dont know really?

run it around for a while,if your tappets are old it takes longer for them to repressurise after an oil change 8)

Ive also noticed the oil pressure is lower than it was with the thicker oil

Could this have anything to do with it ... to be honest may drain and put
thicker 10w40 in it ... :?

Forgot to mention the oil was called ULTRA-V 0w30 Fully Synthetic . the
engine has only done 82k so dunno if that means tappets are old but ive
seen cars with more milage than mine running Mobil 1 fully synth with no
probs so dunno ... The joys of motoring

its too thin.

That's what I would of said as well.

A thicker oil will quieten down a noisy engine. So perhaps a 10w - 50. That's what I run atm until I replace the lifters and then I'll put in a 5/10w - 40. :)

That's the kind of grade that newer Zetec engines and the likes use. Must of been like water coming out of the container.

i foudn wen u changed from 10w 40 to 15w 40 it was to thick and i was remmomended the 15w for this engine so i thought id try it errr no..

so i got sum 5w 40 fully synthetic as i rag the fk out of my car its needed and it sounds sweet.

so id got got 5w 40 if u drive it hard or mobil 1 0w 40 funny stnthetic the expensive stuff.

AFAIK the only difference between the 10w-40 and 15w-40 is the thickness when cold? It's still - 40. I am under the impression that the lower the first number the thinner the oil is from cold (and helps protect from colder weather as it gets around the engine quicker). The last number is how thick the oil is when at temperature?

It'll probably be a bit more "scientific" than that, but to me, you shouldn't of had a problem with 15w-40 being too thick. :?

But like you say, 5w-40 is a good one to get. :)

Think i'll put 10w50 back in ... such a pain i thought thinner oil would
be better as my car runs cool , oil stays around 75c and the water stays on
the first notch on the water temp gauge .. will it damage the engine if i
leave it in for now as im a bit skint at the moment . or had i better get some thicker oil in before any damage may happen .. car will be off the road for
about 3 weeks because M.O.T has run out without me realising  so
wont be getting used now for a while anyway ...

Cheers for your input guys :D

If it's off the road for 3 weeks, just leave it till you get some more wonga together (that's what I'd do). :) Just drain the oil and put the new stuff straight in.

Silkolene do a 10w-50 (Fully Synthetic) oil... quite expensive though.

Motul and Fauchs do a 10w-40 and is a bit cheaper.

Mobil 1 is a 0W-40, not a 30, thats the key difference

I used 5w40 fully synth on my old cars as they ran very hot on trackdays due to no oil cooler......t/b'd clio runs cool as fcuk though so went for semi synth 10w40....

If you want cheap stuff until you can afford proper fully synth to replace to 0w30, get some excellium from the renault dealers - 5w40, about £23 for 5 litres iirc :)
