View Full Version : Oil Pressure Readings. What do you get? Opinions?

I am abit worried about my oil pressure reading...I run 5w40 semi synthetic oil of high quality and do oil and filter changes every 3-4K but I am worried that oil pressure is not brilliant. It hasnt missed a beat or tapped etc but the guage seems to be reading lower than i'd like. My readings are;

Cold Start in morning = 4.5 - 5Bar
40*C = 2.5Bar
60*C = 2Bar
80*C = 0.5 - 1Bar
100*C = 0.2 - 0.5 Bar

These are around about figures that i've spotted and are idle figures. When driving at around 2.500rpm figures are;

Cold Start = At the top 5.8Bar ish
40*C = 4Bar
60*C = 3Bar
80*C = 2.2Bar
100*C = 2Bar

When im flat out and oil temp is around 100*C, oil pressure doesnt seem to rise over 3Bar. Once again, no dodgy noise's at all and the engine sounds like a good one in my experience. No bottom end knock in the morning at all. What do you all think?

Gauges are about as accurate as ......a gauge that isnt accurate.

If your not happy with your engine then give it to me, i wont complain about its oil pressure

I dont really know about oil pressures tbh......

I only know roughly what mine does, as tbh I dont take that much notice of the gauge.

On cold start up it goes straight up to 5.5-5.9 bar right at the top on tick over.
general driving round town when the car is warm usually fluctuates between 2-4 bar.

On the motorway it is from 3-5 bar with temps never getting over 80. It has only ever got just before 80 on the motorway on a really hot day too.

but hope this helps.

My cars oil will hit 120 degrees no problem at a 90mph constant motorway run!

F7R blocks have external water cooled oil coolers laine 8)

look like similar oil presures to mine at 120 deg after a really hard run, the oil presure will sit at .5 on idle and go to about 3 on a run

I know that, but nyk has a F7P

thats right F7P for me.

The only time I have ever seen the oil temp go up anywhere near 100 was when I ran it on shite oil as I was trying out a few different types. I think it was the quantum oil that it ran hot on 10/40.

Mine runs uber cool with this rad/ventage....never seen above 90 degrees yet  will run at 80 degrees on a motorway run @5 bar.

mine used to be about 5 bar on the motorway but seems to have dropped to around 3 now.

As Mat said to me when I noticed mine idling at 0.5bar when I picked it up after the willy-track conversion, don't worry about it - you wouldn't if the gauge wasn't there or didn't work LoL

Cliolord, those numbers are about similar to what I am getting on my F7R, looks perfectly normal to me.

100 on mway on the old valver and pressures little bit lower u were getting, engien was sound tho and as said the gauges are less than 100% accurate!lol

new one pressure is higher across the range, but engines only done 10k since complete from the bottom up brand new rebuild! n temp is lower thanks to the mocal! 8)

On my valver the readings are max about 3.5 bar when cold, and at idle @ 100C basically drops to 0 bar. Rises to 2-3 bar when at 3k revs when hot (95-100C) but doesn't go much beyond.

Max temp I have seen is about 102C on the gauge.

Try cleaning the contacts/connectors on the sensors... as the electrical resistance may be worse due to corrosion and grime (same with fuel tank sensor on a lot of cars).

Think people worry too much about oil pressure, as said gauges can be inaccurate. I'd only worry if you're driving along and it drops to zero!

Makes you wonder why they install gauges that are so inaccurate (ok it looks like an extra 'feature' but you would think they would actually do the job they are meant to correctly, or at least reasonably close.

They probably did all those 13 odd years ago.

yeah am change all three dials in mine for new ones.

People tend to forget that proper workshop equipment oil pressure gauges have to be calibrated every 6 months-yearly. imo the renault ones do a good job just letting you know that theres at least some pressure there and by how much it drops when hot, i for one like having that reasurrance :D

Yeah completely agree. I think I mentioned in this thread already about servicing (cleaning) the connections, but your right... parts wear over time, sludge builds up etc etc.... wires corrode giving a weaker signal... more etc etc :D

On m/way mine runs at Between 100-115 degrees.

It never used to, dunno why its started doing that?

You recently changed the oil for a different brand?

When warm 0 bar
when flat out warm, 1.5 bar hehe
180k mile engine, which doesnt tap or knock at all, sounds sweet but hg has issues with water..
I dont care it's F7R time soon
Just waiting for the engine to have its manic last 5 mins when sometimes they go like F**k then go bang :)

Not changed it, however i was running a knackered engine before.

I use the halfords 10w40 at the moment.

get some decent oil and see if it improves.

could do with a pic on the connetions to clean ..

10w40 helix and flushed with forta engine flush

6bar when cold start

warm 3000 rpm 3.5 bar

1 - 2 bar at tick over

very hot day 0.5 - 1 bar

seen it go too 0 bar somtimes but was a very hot day and been on moterway but was at 3 - 4 bar then

yea i agree i take the gauges with a pich of salt as i do with the outside temp
