View Full Version : Lumpy Idle?

Hey I sort one problem and another seems to pop up. It's been acting a bit lumpy for awhile now and it's a bit annoying.

Basically it idles fine then starts chugging about, it used to go away when warm but it's not back to haunt me! Another problem it has is if i'm clutch controlling it on a hill it starts kangarooing so i'm starting to think it may be lambda related.

I've just checked the TPS resistance and they were quite a way out, however I couldn't adjust it enough to the right values so I left it, could this be the problem?

Here's a video.

try a fuel cleaner .. seems ok to me valvers are lumpy full stop..

is a old skool engine it has no vvt

Also check that the fuel pump connector under the rear seat is clean and connected tightly.

my old valver was terrible from cold, icv needed cleaning - worth a try?

cheers ill try the fuel cleaner and fuel plug.

its like a pattern though, runs good for 5secons then lumpy for 5!

Look at that video, that's what it sometimes does now, it goes from lumpy to that then normal and back again!! Is that the lambda?

Looks normal to me.

My valver engine did that from a cold start and so does my willy engine, it's fine, doesn't cause problems when driving and certainly doesn't cause my car to kangaroo.

If it's making your car kangaroo then something can't be right..

Test the resistance of the coolant temp sensor - this was giving me all sorts of idle problems in my old hybrid. Its the white plugged connector on the thermostat housing. IIRC resistance should be high when cold and low when hot.

Only a few quid from Renault too!

hey the CTS is 2months old, i think it's lambda, doesnt a dodgy one cause these symptoms?

Mine was only 10ish months old before failing

its most likely the lambda yes mate

Which sensor do you mean? The coolant sensor on the passenger side below the oil temp sensor?

There was a picture on here somewhere but i cant find it..

On the right hand side of the block (looking from front end), is the thermostat and its housing (right next to the airbox). Going into this will be 3 connectors - a brown plugged one, white plugged one and black plugged one. The brown one is the sender for the temp gauge, white one is the coolant temp sensor and black one is something else lol

Thats all off the top of my head, but they arent hard to find.

CTS is the white one

Should there be a gap here where that TPS screw is??

also is this lambda suitable for this car?

read somewhere you should only fit a bosch one as the others are not up to the job.

Hi i was just wondering if you ever sorted this problem AmDaMan if so what was it mine does it all the time hot or cold if i start it up its does it for 10 mins then cures its self intill i turn it off and start it again tryed everything i can think of now had enough

mm fuel cleaner will not sort that.. has it been sorted

Hi, a bosch lambda made it a lot better but it's still quite lumpy sometimes, i just gave up!

I have this same lumpy idle problem now too :?

Somebody must know how to fix it please?!

one thing i would check is a loose connection on your sensors, mine did it for a while and so i changed the plugs, dizzy cap, leads, lambda and it was still doing it, i simply unplugged and cleaned all the sensor plugs and its disappeared.

one thing to note, if your car is only a weekend warrior plaything then the fuel in the tank could theoretically pick up sediment and therefore clog the fuel filter, ironically mine started doing this after being left for 2months while away with work and came back when it was low on fuel. since cleaning everything and running some good quality shell optimax through it it is now fine.

There a million possibilities, if you intend on keeping the car be patient and systematically replace perishable items, at worst its going to give you a host of new parts! at best it cures the problem.

just because its old dont put up with it being lumpy or tempermental, just go through the checklists and be patient, when its all fine and running sweet you will fall in love with it all over again 8)

Nice advice mate, thanks for that.

I am steadily making my way through all the possibilities.

I have already :

Changed dizzy cap
Cleaned iscv
Rigged up extra earth on speedo cable
Changed fuel filter
Made sure plugs and leads are dry.
Used optimax.....

Going to try cleaning the sensor plugs today.......

Is timing off? Cant that make it lumpy?

how do you test the tps resistance - any guides

Andyvalver
30-06-2007, 22:14
Timing could be a notch out.

More than likley cts or icv id say. Or a dodgy earth?

My gearbox earth snapped the other day, feckin car was missin like a bitch. Rev counter all over th place lol. I cleaned the dizzy up before i notice the earth hangin off :x

Hulio

There is supposed to be a guide on here on how to test the tps resistance but I dont think its around anymore.
I did a search on here and found some values that somebody had posted and tested mine against those after I stupidly removed my tps for cleaning. They were very different so I kind of adjusted mine relative to the values and it seemed o.k.

You need a multimeter to test the ohms of the wires coming out of the tps with it in position on the car but loose so it can be adjusted and the engine switched off.

Here's the values that were posted on here

Red+Yellow 5.78k ohms
Red+Green 2.01k ohms
Yellow+Green 4.27k ohms

mines the same as urs atm, except mines cuts out after 5mins of heating up... i replaced the TCS and since then its idling funny, 2500, to 1150 to 900, and back and forth... idled fine b4 i changed TCS and cut out, thot it would solve my prob but think its my ISCV... is there anything that needs done wen u change the TCS? mines is RSi tho...

AmDaMan

Just an update folks, when mines up to temp, if I disconnect the CTS it's perfect, so I can only assume it was both the lambda as the CTS causing these issues!

drsmith1979
04-08-2007, 16:03
so you have sorted it?

AmDaMan
05-08-2007, 23:06
Yeah just need the CTS.

Cleaned all the earths and waterproofed them and a new lambda.
