Hi everyone,
Just to allay any fears,I sold Ian this box   just before Xmas and then took it to KN Transmissions to have it stripped and rebuilt. On his 17" rims he tells me it does 105 mph @ 7500,and takes approx 14 secs to get there from a stand still   ~~ hand held stop watch though

tasty! Gearing is too short for me though

cliolord
04-04-2007, 18:43
yeah, abit silly short if 5th crack 125 or something, that would be better....blasting along the motorway at 5,500rpm in 5th at 70mph lol

cliorod
05-04-2007, 09:45
It 'aint for motorway work    "Cliolord",The max speed on most single venue Rallies you need is about 110mph ~~ but getting there is the key    Unless you are doing the events like the "Tour of Mull" ,Irish closed road events etc that top speed is adequate. Also his motor will rev out,a tadge   under 8000.
If he needs more speed there are a variety of tall profile moulded slick tyres will help

and not being picky but its more a group N box as group A clio,s ran fully modded boxes with different casings.

cliorod
07-04-2007, 19:41
Maxi boy,

The Grp N boxes had standard ratios and no LSD ,the Grp A boxes had to use the same casings as Per FIA regulations ~~~ whereby unless 500 were produced, they could homologate them ~~~ which they did not, only the MAXI kit cars had the modded casings ~~ these were the 6 speed dog and sequential boxes.
To try and evaluate the cost.I bought a similar LSD unit for my 5 Turbo in 1992 cost then was £1850 plus vat ~~ plus £150 for a special short shaft,do not know what they are now.The AVANTI gear cluster retails currently at over £2k.

MAXIBOY
07-04-2007, 19:49
cool. thats me told then. was the maxi,s with the special casings. sorry  but was not disputing over the value as my lesser box was over a grand. just thought they had the special casings as listed in my group A catalogue. my bad.

cliorod

No probs MAXI  .It is just that over the 35 years   involved in Rallying, and helping to build various spec. cars.  You get to know a lot of the FIA/MSA rules ~~~ which I have to admit are very strict ~~~ For example ALL the works FORD FOCUS'S including the EDDIE STOBART cars were excluded from the Rally Portugal last week   and M Sport fined in the region of £50,000   ~~~~ The reason ~~~ The window manufacturer had supplied incorrect thickness of rear windows   these were 3mm instead of 4mm ~~ net weight saving about 200grammes !!!!!!  ~~ weight of a pack of ciggies ~~~~ I bet M Sport have a new supplier now

In answer to Cliolords and others problems regarding ratios ~~ When deciding ratios "WE" ( rallying fraternity) decide upon top speed   ~~ what tyres we are using, what max revs are to be used, and using this formula
FORMULA :- 60 x R.P.M
WHEEL REV’S/MILE x AXLE RATIO x G/BOX RATIO

AXLE RATIO = FINAL DRIVE

GEARBOX RATIO = WHAT EACH GEAR IS

you can work out the speed in each gear, obviously engine revs depend upon on the "tune" of engine ~~ has to how quick you get there
Ie a std engine revving to 7500rpm will take longer to attain the speed than a full house TB'b engine with cams etc etc..
I hope that is of use to you.
Most tyre manufacturers, will supply you with the revs per mile for the tyres ~~ for competition tyres anyway.
I raise a wry smile ,when I hear the "Chavs"  ,saying how fast there SAXO/CORSA or whatever will do,now its got a big bore exhaust and induction kit :D  :D
Unless it has had the rev limit increased the top end speed will remain the same   ~~ unless they have fitted bigger profile /diameter tyres etc.
The above formula is also handy,if you fit lower profile tyres ~~ you can find out exactly at what revs your car is doing the limits 30,40,50 mph etc etc and not relying on the speedo which will probably be out

btw............i enquired a few years ago with frank at avanti about a gearbox , so it might save me having to swap em evry 5-6 months lol

total cost was summat like this

avanti 5 speed helicot gear kit....£1700
avanti lsd with solid driveshaft conversion .........£2200
build up and labour charges/extras (bearings etc)........£400

could have got 10%+ discount on 5 or more orders...funnily enough, no1 else was interested lol.

bit dear...so i never bothered, have spent just over £300 on boxes since. lol

Not wishing to stick up for anyone who thinks a Peco and cone filter will increase his or her top speed, but...

If your top speed is not limited by the engine reaching maximum revs in top gear, rather the lack of power to get there, then if you increase the power of the car then surely it will make it easier to reach maximum revs and therefore increase the top speed?

Or am I missing something?

Aren't you guys saying the same things, back to front? Zollo.

BTW, is there any videos of our octogenarian, cliorod, driving at a rude pace? Surely, that would raised a heartbeat or 2 among us young whipper snappers :D

Zollo
13-04-2007, 12:38
Maybe! lol

I thought what Rod was saying was that unless you increase your rev limit or increase your wheel/tyre size, you can't increase your top speed.

What I'm trying to say is that some road cars don't reach max revs in top gear, so more power will actually increase their top speed. A MkIV Supra, for instance, doesn't rev out in 6th. But more power will mean they can continue accelerating past where a standard one would run out of puff, thereby going faster :D

Maybe this will help. I did this for Matt, using the tyres quoted and for the Gripper box Ian is now selling

Hi Mat.
I could not find the revs/mile for your tyres so I used these 185/55/15 and 205/50/15 KUMHO ESCTA V70A

185/55/152

1st ~ 3.1:1 ~~ 36.53mph
2nd~ 1.8:1 ~~ 62.91mph
3rd ~ 1.3:1 ~~ 87.11mph
4th ~ 1.0:1 ~~ 113.25mph
5th ~ 0.8 :1 ~~141.56 mph

205/50/15
1st ~~ 36.78mph
2nd ~~ 63.34mph
3rd ~~ 87.71mph
4th ~~ 114.02
5th ~~ 142.53

The standard valver 1st & 2nd gears
1st ~~ 3.7:1 ~~ 30.60mph
2nd ~~ 2.1:1 ~~ 53.92mph
The last two are with the 55 profile tyres
I accept that engine mods allow the engine to rev more feely and reach max revs ~~ which along with the Final Drive ratio and tyre size governs the speed
