I have had this problem too. The thread at the end of the studs are probably shagged. Once replaced it should be a hell of a lot easier!

My friend didn't use any special tools when he bolted my manifold to the downpipe... :?:

The bolts are fine, just can't the bloody springs compressed enough to get the nut on :(

is the gasket on properly? i found this to be the problem... give it a few taps with a wee hammer to knock it all the way onto the manifold!!

well i think the gasket is blowing which is why i took them off in the first place, so maybe it isnt seated right? should i be able to easily get the nuts on the bolts without having to massively compress the springs?

yes

providing the gasket is on properly, i find the easiest way to fit the springs/nuts, is to lean over the engine, pull the downpipe up into its position, then put the right hand side spring and nut on wi the left hand.

Its a but of a balancing act with your fingers, but its easily doable.

as said, shud be easy tbh if its sitting right, just a bit fiddly

So having to put 7 cable ties round the spring to compress it enough to get the nut on probably means something isnt right?

defo something not right.

make sure the gasket is sitting right, and that the plate thingy that the bolts go through is moving free...and at the top of the downpipe, so its sitting properly round the cone.

Oh is the plate bit round the downpipe meant to be touching the bit on the exhaust manifold
