View Full Version : Vibration Problem - Need Help
after collecting my fixed car today i have a problem
im getting a vibration at around 1.5-2.5k revs, its not a heatshield to engine mosquito type vibration, its a proper vibration, and sounds very similar to when the down pipe touches the dogbone
however, Andy @ GDI had it up on the ramps and we looked over everything and couldnt see where it could be coming from, the downpipe is miles away from the dogbone (i think i have a 19 downpipe)
could it be an engine mount or something ?........i cant actually see anything close to anything, it all looks fine
when the car is cold its not as bad, once it warms up it seems to come a lot more but that could just be me really ive not had much chance to have a look
on the motorway on the way home if i was at 60/70 i couldnt feel/hear it, if i dropped down the revs low it would come, if you put the clutch in it goes
u tryin to cause an accident??
60-70 on a mway is pussies speed..........;)
has the engine been taken out or was it just head off
could be a mount ? if you can feel it vibrate strong
sorry cant help more
p.s engine lookin mint in your other post
any other work done apart from head gasket
nevermind lol, give me some possible causes
if the side-mount isnt positioned right, the manifold may be rubbing the bulk-head lower down.
worth a check.
Not a 19 downpipe -you'd need to chop the clio centre pipe back a fair bit!

lol :D
dam brun your having some probs with at moment ..
exhaust hangars in good nick mate? tend to flex when they get warm when they are old/worn giving exhaust enough play to start knockin on all sorts when ur pullin torque
i'd concentrate on the fact that it only does it when moving and goes when you dip your clutch.

hmm possibly i didnt look at that when it was up on the ramps i just had a look at the downpipe
ill check that later
how do you actually align engine mounts ?

head off mate, not sure if the box mount was undone or not ?
nope no other work, just a clean up and headgasket, and cambelt
Driveshaft or c/v joint related?
just noticed this, could this be the cause ?
is this part of the engine/box mount ?
if i bought a new mount from GSF would it come with new bolts ?

sure is, thats the t plate that the joins the mount to the box, get that bolt back in! may not be it but its not gonna be helpin havin stuff missin!
is it just a bolt thats missing ?........or is something else supposed to be attached to that ?

steering column against down pipe also?
not had a proper look yet mate needed my torch, could possibly be
looking on dialogys im missing a bracket, which i think fell off last night on the motorway
that dunt sound very good.
come on Jon your the expert, whats fell off and what do i need ? 8)
well on the williams theres a black bracket that runs from the front of the box, over the mount, and then bolts to the back. not 100% if all valvers have this tho, some iv seen have, some havent.
it also bolts to the mount where u have the bolt missing. i would imagine that if it has fallen off at any kind of speed, u would def have heard it. id also check for any damage it could have done as it bounced its way along the underside of the car as well.....if u had 1 fitted b4 and u suspect its fallen off.
is it this 1 from another thread about a missing bolt ?

Nope.
It the one is this post:
I tried to fit the R19 mount but it was fouling the strengthening bracket used to support the gearbox mount. After confirming with Mr Brown i proceeded to modify the support to allow the bracket to fit. I removed a bit more metal after this picture.

R19 mount fitted (you can see where it was fouling)

thanks for the pics mat
ive ordered some bolts and a bracket from Renault but the bracket on Dialogys doesnt look like that, ill get them on Tuesday so hopefully it will make more sense then, but Tuesday is my only day off that week so i could do with knowing what im doing before i do it

the more info about this the better, im currently not driving the car until i can find what this vibration is, hopefully its this missing bolt from the mount
ive had to use public transport for 2 days and been late for work twice

Yeah, the one in your picture is for a 16v, i posted a williams one.
Williams one is better as it bolts on both sides.
Mat.
Unless the mount itself is loose, I cant see the lack of that bracket casuing a vibration.

Agreed, this is a different problem we are addressing.

My sypmtoms were, vibrations (harsh noise and vibrating wheel) during hard acceleartion in 1st and 2nd gear, and the same vibration when cornering hard left.
The Fix:
Jack up engine via sump, udno drivers side engine mount (next to PAS res), then yank then engine forwards as hard as you can, being on a downward slope might help things.
Never had the vibration from that day on.
you said it goes when you dip the clutch, have you investigated that area and worked back from there?

i would hazard a guess that if it goes when u dip the clutch, then when u come off power and dip the clutch the egine rocks slightly forward,so i would say poss a mount that moving the engine bk and touchin on something?
my 172 does this, turns out its my top engine mount which i changing this week

how do you mean Ben ?........all ive done is look around at things
Unless the mount itself is loose, I cant see the lack of that bracket casuing a vibration.
well its not just the bracket that is missing, the bolt that holds it on is too, i was thinking that the lack of the bolt might mean the mount isnt being held on as well as it should be and the engine/box is being allowed to move too much

You said that the vibration stops when you dip the clutch.......therefore it must be related.
You dont check your dipstick when your ABS breaks.

where the bracket bolts to the mount , there is no support for anything else there...no bolt, no bracket..all good.
what other work was carried out when the HG was fixed?
the cambelt was changed, and thats all
