Changed the box on saturday but ever since seems to be idling at 1.5-2k rpm? Im sure its blowing a bit from the exhaust manifold/downpipe bit but this shouldn't cause crappy idle surely?
you've probably missed an earth off the gearbox mate, there's 2, one which connects to the chasis (passenger wheel inner arch) and theres another where the passenger driveshift is, its part of the loom.

I *think* I connected them will check later though, anything else it's likely to be?

I've checked this before it seemed ok, thing is I've never had a problem until I changed the box...

could be coincidence? could be the speedo cable was tugged...who knows..the symptoms suggest the speedo earth is at fault...or another earth

yes it would make a difference..if its not plugged in then plug it back in..it may well rectify the fault...hehe im sure it must have popped out itself ;-)
