View Full Version : Wipers and wind pressure

Hi guys :)

As a 130-40 mph rated car I would expect my car to do this without the wipers being forced "on" by themselves. Above a certain speed the wipers are forced up by air pressure and then about halfway up the screen they 'operate' the mechanism and return down... repeating the cycle of being forced up... operating. They stop doing this when I reduce speed below a certain level.

I have tried lowering the wipers arms to be as close to the scuttle panel as possible, but this has not made a scrap of difference (apart from not wiping as much of the drivers side of the screen of course :( )

Anyone had this and got a remedy/solution?

have you blades got the spoilers on them?

No, just the 'standard' wiper arm and blade setup. (Brand unknown).

Get one with the aerofoil on the main wiper blade.

I think that he thinks you mean the big brightly coloured jobs from halfords that look more like a rear spoiler than a wind deflector.

indeed.. lol, to match the blue led washer spray jets.

Satin black will be all i fit thanks

I don't do neons, LED washers or shiny bling.

Will the spoiler/aerofoil style stop them being forced up? Has anyone actually fitted them to resolve this problem with sucess?

Mine have them and they don't lift. Well, maybe a mm or so at top whack but not halfway up teh screen.

Sounds like the mechanism is worn if there going up the windscreen.
All you usually get is a wobble from the wiper blade where the air is hitting it, not moving across the screen.

Defo something going on with the mech/motor as arj256 says, no way the wipers should be moving (excessively) when at speed regardless of which wipers are fitted.

Yup, they air pressure seems to force the wipers up the screen to about half way, and then mechanism (I assume) tries to reset itself by completely the wipe cycle for you.

I actually noticed it bizarrely does this when the battery isn't even connected and I was refitting the wipers/mechanism. Nearly trapped a finger when refitting it and it started to cycle! (due to replacing the heater blower).

Shouldn't do that at all mate if the battery isn't connected. I've only done that once and it was when I forgot to disconnect the battery.

Yup, thats pretty much what I though as well! Not sure why it manages to work without being connected unless there is a weight and spring setup inside the motor?

maybe i can get better economy by driving faster in the rain with self activating wipers! lol
