Looks like this has been a common problem on wc and the search has show me a few alternatives. Before i go out with the spanners has anyone else suffered this problem.

I own a phase 2 16v with the original renault alarm and a aftermarket clifford alarm.

To start the car normally you dissarm the clifford alarm then the renault alarm by using the key. Once the renault alarm is deactivated the imobaliser light on the dashboard stays lite (or flashes) and u can start the engine.

The problem i have is for some reason the imobaliser light on the dash board isnt illuminating at all now and the car will not fire.

Rich has posted before saying a MK1 16v ecu will bypass the original coding and allow the car to start without the arming / disarming of the renault alarm.

Ive tried a brand new battery and its no better. It ran fine the last time i started it.

Any ideas ?

Ive had another idea....if i remove the renault alarm - i wont have any problems either ??? should be the same as a phase one ecu ?

You need a phase 1 ecu imo. removing the alarm doesnt effect the immobiliser as they are seperate.

Ok i will try it tonight if i get chance.

Why would it suddenly stop working correctly ?

As said a ph1 ECU will do the trick. I'm guessing from what you've said that you have one you can use, but if not and you are after one drop me a PM as I have one for sale.

you can just disable the immobiliser alltogether as well, but iirc being a pain in the arse is an understatement!

if worst comes to mate pop the will ecu in just to see if it fires. obviuosly mapping will be out but it will fire.

ive got a spare valver ecu but im reluctant to waste it on this car when it was fine a month ago.

If i remove the imboliser and renault alarm - but leave whate ever is in the coded ecu - the car will start as there is no wires left to imobalise it ??

Yeah, the car will not be immobilised if you change it for a phase 1 ecu. The light will not even come on again.

I had a similar problem with my phase 2 M reg valver, it wouldn't fire, turned out the phase 2 ecu was faulty so i swapped it for a phase 1 and been fine ever since.

I reckon your ECU is faulty.

Ok guys.

what part of the ecu has this code in then ?? does removing the chip help ?

it should do, if your going to do it yourself, it's worth a try, if you'll be payin a tv repair man 10 quid to do it, i'd put my money on a phase 1 ecu, guaranteed to solve the problem that way.

ok - so what has a phase two ecu got that a phase one doesnt.

I dont want to waste a ecu lol

I dont want to waste a ecu lol

why are you wasting an ecu? it doesnt work anymore, you have aph1 to fix the problem, stop being a tight arse and use it! what else you gonna need it for?

On the dials, right hand side, near the bottom, yellow light, square with a zigzag line going through it.

UPDATE

Fitted the phase one ecu and the car is now fine.

I discovered the reason for the failure of the original ecu when i removed it. The plastic box had water inside it that had turned to jelly !

I have not opened the ecu up yet but i would think that the water has made its way inside....

Refitted the phase one ecu and removed the foam part from the tray - so far so good. Thanks for all your help

MAXIBOY

does the foam part not keep the ecu off the bottom of the box thus helping to keep it dry.

northy

seams to hold the water imo

MAXIBOY

yeah i know what you mean but maybe replace it with a strip on rubber or something as its stoops the ecu rattling around the box

northy

the box has clips in to hold the ecu mate.

MAXIBOY

i know that but without the foam mine rattled on the clips quite bad. but i have stiff springs lol
