View Full Version : Changing a front wheel bearing?

I'd just like to say that I have no intention or ability to do this myself! LoL

I'm just asking as I don't want to have to pay £££ in labour charges at the garage due to them taking ages to get seized things off :?

Should I oil/WD40 the big nut and thread that you can see in the centre of the front wheels when they've not got centre caps on?

No the 'Big nut' doesn't generally seize and they could always use a breaker bar or something big to lever it off.

Often the hardest part is taking the bearing out the hub as they can sometimes weld themselves in etc but there is nothing you can do ie spraying WD40 that would help.

ok, cool, thank you :)

They said a morning to do it.

It better not cost me 3 hours labour!! :x

With air tools it really shouldn't take very long to get the hub itself off the car, changing the bearing can take up to half an hour so you're probably looking at maybe 1-1.5hrs labour + cost of the bearing (£30)...

I think the going rate is around £100.

cool 8)

I might get them to change the thermostat while they've got it - I've looked at doing it myself and it looks complicated  :( lol

Why does that need changing?

You need a lot of pressure to get the bearing out m8...over a ton....so ur best of taking it to somewhere where they can press it out...and press the new one in. :)

Only a ton?

I'll use my bare fingers GRRRRRRR

LOL

re: the thermostat, it's just not warming up again, like the last time it stopped working properly :?

At motorway speeds, round town, wherever, it doesn't go above the bottom of the middle marks on the gauge, which it should usually sit between :(

I've got a thermostat off GSF but didn't realise it looks so complicated

What is the low temp 'stat temperature anyway? I thought it was 86degrees normal, 82 low temp?
The GSF one has 82 on it!

Must be only the rears then....that need a lot of force to get them out

The normal temp is 89', the low temp one you have fitted is 82'.

Weird - GSF have given me a low temp one then! LoL

Take it back then and leave it as it is.

But I think the one I have is actually screwed!

It ran cooler when it was fitted, yes, but it always sat inbetween where it should have - now it's not even getting that warm :(

Stupid thing! :x
