View Full Version : Fuel Economy

I have been monitoring my fuel economy since I got the valver and have made a strange discovery.

Based on: Fill right up till no more can go in. Run car till near empty, take note of milage, refill till no more can go in. Work out fuel econ.

When I first started using the car, my first 2 fills were around the 35mpg mark. I drove it a 'little' harder, and my economy dropped to around 31mpg. Past 2 fills, I have ragged the car a bit taking it upto the limiter many times. I returned 35.8 mpg!

So my question is... WHY? Why if i drive harder to i 'seem' to get the same or better economy? I can't remember if I was using super or regular, but will experiment with this later :)

My calculation is: Milage divided by gallons required to fill when near empty get mpg.

mine does that

and with the diesel box 45mpg on motorway runs is easy

Superunleaded will deof improve mpg.

I also was getting better mpg in the Willy 2 i had....45mpg cruising at 80mph as opposed to 40mpg in the 1.8 at same speed.

hmm. I can get SUL for about 85 from sainsburys, so that's when I normally get it. Have heard a fair few times about people getting better econ on SUL. Not managed to get over 35mpg (overall) yet though.

45mpg on the diesel box (impressive!)? How is the gearing/final drive set up compared to 1.8 and williams boxes?

Ive never understood why people work out their mileage on performance cars? Surely when you buy a performance car you know your fuel costs are going to increase?

Crack on with enjoying the car is what i say! :) Want MPG? Buy a tdi!

on my old rt i used 2 get 200 miles from full tank till petrol light flickered, i think it was about 30-35 litres in a tank?? what sort of milage should i expect on a hybrid with sensible driving???

Justin..
14-03-2007, 22:53
Should get more than 200 miles in the hybrid easy. I think your RT was broken

Normally get 140 miles to £20. Around 30MPG, seems fair. On motorway runs high 30s is easy.

I don't really give a f**k what it gives me in MPG. It's a performance car not a little 1.0 town car

Because it's good to know... and also my previous car was getting 18+mpg on average if screamed around everwhere, and 25+mpg if I did it occasionally (28/29mpg if sensible) (2 litre turbo @ 1 and 1.2 bar). I got the clio because it was a 'compromise' of performance/value. My car would almost have depreciated enough by next year to pay for the clio entirely. I want to know if it's worth keeping the car (based on my assumption that they are more economic) or to get rid for something cheaper/more fuel efficient. That's why I care :)

If I could find a way that got 40+mpg I would be defo interested as it all adds up to more money you can spend later on the car. Having a £200/£250 a month fuel bill isn't really what I want.

I still think it's strange that if I potter about i get the same or better fuel economy though which is why it needs more investigation.

280 miles out of £40 quids worth of juice i get!

flippin eck bill, thats a full tank?! filled up with tesco 99 ron, still got half a tank left and just done 249 miles! im with northy, i get circa 100miles per £10 petrol at around 87p per litre. so for £40 i would be expecting close to 400 miles! lol

i agree that if you are anal about mpg then dont buy a performance car lol however, having said that it is a good idea to keep tabs on it as it can indicate how well the car is running, i.e. lamba sensor problem, cat or exhaust problems, over fueling etc.. so its nice to keep tabs on it.

Interestingly, I can smell fuel when the car is running (normally when cold).

I don't see keeping tabs on fuel econ (and first time i really have done it) being anal when it might mean difference between being able to pay council tax/bills/having a phon/buying parts.

My last fill up was 43 litres at 93p (or 95p can't remember) per litre of plain old regular. That costs me around £4 extra for a fill up. If I get really bad economy then it will be even worse. Will be good to see the difference between the 2 (reg/super) and work out which is actually cheaper based on mpg and price of fuel.

Incidently, my tank reads half full on about 250miles then drops to Reserve or 1/4 tank. The only way to work it out decently is as described in the first thread. Why don't you guys try it rather than guessing, you could save yourself money by doing tests of fuels/brands. I know I wouldn't say no if someone tells me I can save £20-£50 a month by changing fuels/brand.

If that is accurate then your mpg is 43.5 miles per gallon. That uses 46(ish) litres of fuel to acheive, so you could travel around another 35 miles before running completely dry (50 litre tank). Overall your hope is that you can get 435 miles per tank.

My estimated before totally dry is 350 miles (the indicator would be WELL below the Reserve tank mark).

holy ****, and there's me thinking that was normal

to be fair though, my journeys about 9 miles to work, but often do split shifts, so there fore 36 miles a day in 9 mile trips, so the cars only just getting warmed up really by the time i've got to work/home, and this is all back roads, where i like to get my foot down a bit

is this a valid excuse for my shite miles per gallon?

Try using morrisons super or sainsburys super (cheap) and see if you get more miles than you would 'normally'.

I wouldn't buy super at it's normal expensive rip-off prices, but thankfully super markets like to stock it cheapish.

I always work it out roughly on £15 to 100 miles, as I never get more than 300 miles between full and the light coming on! Might be a bit less £ now though, as that was at stupid £1/litre prices lol

So roughly (As i don't know how much you pay for fuel per litre)... your getting about 27/28 mpg on 'killing it', and 34/35 mpg on a run.

Not sure what it is at the moment, around 86.9 maybe :?

In the autocaer test from 1992 they only got 26 mpg out of their valver.

Managed to get 34 mpg from unleaded. will investigate further.

I do know have the smell of fuel when driving, so also might have a leak that needs investigating.. (perhaps more fuel econ to be had hehe).
