10w 40 semi synthetic or fully synthetic oil

Hum I'm not convince (even though Halfords etc say this is the proper normal stuff) I'd just changed the oil in mine for 10-40 (not sure what typre) Vauxhall official stuff they use an hit 120 degress on the track and oil pressure was down to 2 bar. For road work its fine just track work seems to kill it.

you might want to use a 10W-50 for track day use......though different oils handle temps better than others, maybe vauxhalls 10W-40 isnt up2 it

Yep thats sounds most likly but I'm suprised. If its good enough for Vauxhall when its serviced and form new I'd thiunk it ould be better. Bit worrying the amount of track cars which don't probably know how hot there oil is. (mental note change the dci oil quick)
I've got some magnitech stuff I boung last week 10-40 spec so will try that at FCS track time.

dont put Magnatec in mate, it will make the car sound like a bag of spanners

for some reason it doesnt seem to like Renault engines very much

Funny you say that, I've got 10w40 Vauxhal Semi-Synth in mine.. and the car gets a lot hotter than before.

100c normal, 120c on motorways..

Oil pressure is fine at start, but once it's hot.. then it sits about no more than 3bar.. probably 2/3bar at 4k etc..

Not complaining...but this oil thread runs and runs hardly surprising though given it's importance.

My car has done in excess of 100K, I use 5w 40 fully synthetic Mobil 1, temp in town between 80-90 autoroute no more than 100. Maybe 105 if I am having a thrash.

Oil pressure is about 3-3.5 or more at 4,000 revs....prehaps someone could write a definitive on oil and its appropriate uses and put in our technical section.

Can anyone give some indications of what the oil pressure should be through the various stages ie...start up and through both temp and revs used. Are they an accurate guage to the health of the engine :?:

Startup, should be about 5/6 bar.. which mine is in the morning..

It depends massivly on the oil used tho..

Yes, obviously if you are going to do a track day you need an oil that is capable of taking higher temps for longer. Mark was taking about this the other day.

For normal use i think these engines run fine on 10w 40 semi synthtic. Mine ran on this for 140,000 miles with very mininal wear. The trick is just to change it often.

If it helps, we use the Millers technical dept a lot when getting advise for engine oils. They are very helpful and if you also tell them what sort of use the car gets, i.e road or track or both they can recomend the best grade for that use.

Give them a call on 01484 475060.

At one time, we were using Comma 10w/40 fully synth, but put that stuff in an Impreza and the engine sounds like a bag of spanners. We drained it and put in some 10w/60 Millers CFS and the difference was amazing. We ended up just using the Comma up on normal cars like Escorts etc just to get rid of it and lost a fair amount of money on it.

If you want to find out which oils are good, then get an Impreza, because they will only survive on the very best oils on the market. We have one coming in for an engine rebuild next week. Now wether its down to the fact he put in 5w/40 fully synth from Halfords is open to debate, but the fact is the engine has knackered its big ends within about 3 weeks of the customer putting in that oil. My guess is the oil broke down under the heat and we will be sending a sample off to Millers to test it for us.

hmm, worried about my oil tbh, im running the ranualt elf 10w 40 and that sit about 110 when giving it a thrash, i always back off when it gets up to 110 ish as i dont want it to die :(

when i start her up the oil presure is about 6 on the metre till it get warm then it dropped down to about 3 ish for normal running depending on how much it gets trashed
will be getting some 5w 40 silkoline soon to see if that makes much diff

Some oil pressure readings from my Williams, using 5w/40 (Carlube RRR) fully-syn oil.

When oil temp below 60C
2.5 @idle
4 - 5 @3.2k rpm

When oil temp about 80C to 95C
0.5 @idle
2.8 @3k rpm
4 @4.5k - 5k rpm

About 180k km in the odometer. I think it was pretty much the same when I first got the car at 27k. The engine loses about a litre of oil every 5k - 8k km; which is about when I replace the oil.

I use 5w 40 9000quartz total from GSF.

Used Elf but its expensive when i can get 5Litres from GSF for £18.

Have a look in your williams handbook to see what grade of oil to use. (white A5 book with blue title)

But millers is across the road from my house so if your having trouble getting any please let me know.
