Hi, i have a williams 1 and since owning the car the drivehaft has popped out four times (i've had the car about 7 months.) I've replaced the gearbox mount under the battery which i was told caused the problem the first time and all the other mounts look fine. Anyone any ideas?

could have 16v item fitted instead of longer williams item.

the drivers side has a roll pin from the gearbox. The shaft is then fixed to the hub with a large 30mm nut.

The passenger side is bolted to the box with 3 bolts (theses sometimes strip - you will know if yours have as it will be leaking oil) again the drive shaft is secured to the hub with a 30mm lock nut.

The shaft shouldnt have any play in at all when you grab it and try to push it forwards and backwards.

I would check your lock nuts are still there on the hubs....0171's had the pasenger side sheared off !

Cheers for the replies. The driveshaft is on the passenger side.I've checked all bolts and they look sound. The car has been lowered would this contribute to the problem? Is there anyway of knowing if a 16v shaft has been fitted without spending a shed load on another one and comparing them?

when you say popping out, do you mean its just the driveshaft itself or is it popping the differential circlip in the box itself?

Lol @ no roll pin, wouldn't wanna b in tht car when you go over a particularly harsh pot hole and the shaft comes off  can only imagine the damage tht cud cause!

When i refitted mine the other week took a few goes to a) push it on far enough b) line up the holes so I think you just aren't lining it up right :p

Justin..

 It's lined up right i can assure you, the holes only half over lap the lenght of the shaft, if i turn it, it just gets worse

the shaft on the passenger side will be the wrong lenght, you can make it less frequent by bumping the engine over on the mounts although that can make the drivers one pop.

No roll pin isn't a big drama, there cars that never had a pin from the factory and they are ok. They never pop oput on potholes unles its been lowered a stupid amount, normally it pops on full lock and caused by soft engine mounts.

To get the splines lined up to allow the hole to line up so you can fit a pin, you need to loosen the bottom hub to strut bolt and remove the top one this will allow the hub to pivt out and the shaft to come off the spline, move it until it lines up and shove a new pin in.

if the holes are half line up in a transvers way, stick a pin in and belt away, it will pull it over. The hole where it enters on the box shaft is dished to allow this
